Hey guys, I just bought a used bow from a coworker - didn't know anything about it but it looked nice and was just $200 - I need a bow, so I jumped at this over the martin he was offering for $300. I am on a budget, of course. So I get home, and look this model up - it's the Oneida Discovery - wow. I see this is no ordinary bow (I'm pretty new to archery in general). Some folks are saying that these are rare and valuable, some folks seem to think they are trash. Most agree they're not great for deer hunters (can't be much worse than what I had already, has more let off so what the heck). So my question is, should I stick with this thing? Was $200 a good deal? Should I cough up the extra $100 and ask this guy for his Martin? I want to say that was a phantom - he said he got it for $600 new. Obviously that's the value buy, but I wanted to save the $100. So, you know, is this thing worth some money just because of the rarity, or the history of the model?

For those of you who think I should keep it, I've heard they are loud but can be quieted down quite effectively, but I have no idea how to go about doing that - what do I need to buy/do? There's a sticker on this one that reads 'R1426' - does that tell you something about this specific bows age or quality?

Thanks for any advice, and I'm sorry for not knowing anything going into this (I know, stupid decision to buy first ask questions later. this guys cool, he's happily let me exchange if I ask). The thing is, it looks nice! I don't understand what could possibly be so terrible about the darn thing, but I guess I might find out when I put some arrows through it.

I don't know much about a Discovery, but PM me and I can point you to some resources on the Discovery and Oneida bows.

From what I read and have been told, the Discovery was plagued with issues and especially at higher weights. One lever cam guru that rebuilds a lot of Oneidas told me that 1 in 100 worked well from the factory BUT they are sought after by bowfisherman like myself (new to the sport) due to the lower weights used and heavy arrows and can be set up at low weight very well by someone who knows what they are doing (I do not).

You can play with it and maybe make it a hunting bow or sell it as a bowfishing rig and make some money for a new modern reliable bow if that one is not. I might know a bowfishing buyer if you decide to sell depending on riser type and condition.

Here is a link to Oneida history regarding Oneida's line up, years made, issues and successes

Americaneagle bows and Joe seems to be a great resource on the Oneida lineup too.

    good luck
