2010 deer season This tale starts with a trail camera picture I got back in October of this fat 10 point. (see picture below) for the area this picture was taken in this is buck is in the top 10% of deer in the area. It was Halloween weekend and I was on my way to hunt a different area and I decided to stop in and see what was happening on this property. I was walking around looking for sign when I look to my left and there he is standing there at 20 yards. Bingo I found his bed and a short distance later I found his scrape. I set up on him right away then continued on my way to the property I was hunting. After an uneventful 5 days of hunting I went back and got in the stand I hung earlier. I got there way before light and waited. As the sun started to show I hear foot steps getting closer. Out pops the only doe I saw all season she walked around me then went and fed in a near by food plot. She was the only deer I would see in that sit. Back to work I went for a week then it was time for the Wisconsin Gun season. I set up the same stand for opening day and again at first light I here foot steps coming. When the deer finally showed himself it was a small 8 point. (See Below)I saw a total of 3 bucks in 3 sits and none of them were the buck I was looking for. I did a little in season scouting mission at 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning. I found a fresh, good set of tracks leading into a bedding area so I grab my Summit climber and set up. At 3:00 pm I hear a shot to the North East but don’t think much of it the bedding area is south of me. Monday Morning I go back to my climber and wait for him to come back into the bedding area. At 7:30 I hear some branches breaking then quite then more branches breaking. Its way too much noise to be a deer. This went on for 45 minute when I saw a deer head come out of the brush. Something just doesn’t look right he is too low to the ground. I raise my rifle and place him in the scope that’s when I see he is dragging himself along with his front legs. He was shot in the spine behind the front legs. I climb down and put him out of his misery. The only shot I heard was at 3,I assume someone shot him and never seen him go down and never looked for him but I was in awe at his will to live. It was an ugly scene one I hope doesn’t repeat itself. That’s the story of my 2010 deer hunting early season. I still have an archery tag in my pocket and I will be after that 10.(Sorry about the crappy picture I never thought to take one until Rob/PA mentioned it.)
Good job putting him down !! It sucks you have to finish someone's botch up and lose your tag. Hoping you are rewarded later on with your archery tag in a big way !! Tim
It's hunters like you that give us a GOOD name. You did the ethical thing. You expressed respect tfor our quarry, and, put selfish desires(waiting for a big shooter) aside. Thanks for doing the right thing ! I truly hope your actions are rewarded and you get a shot at your target buck... GOOD JOB !
Thanks. I'm a die hard when it comes to filling my bow tag. I will go until the rules tell me to stop. Or my wife does
The whitetail's will to live never ceases to amaze me. Nice job on doing the right thing Dano. The Deer Gods will reward you yet.
You did the right thing. That thing could have suffered for days. Amazes me that whoever shot him first, couldnt find him or chose not to.
Your time will come mater. You did the right thing by taking that deer out of his misery, I hope you get rewarded for it in the near future. Good luck bud!!!
