Pull a compound bow back unless I had an arrow in it and was intending to shoot... Especially on a sweaty hot summer day. To this day, I cringe when I see someone else do it!
To hunt with a recurve or long bow. I didn't mind practicing with my recurve or limiting my shot range more then compound. I didn't mind shooting fingers as that is what I start out doing. It was fun to shoot. It just wasn't fun to hunt with it. Tim
Tim: I respect your decision (fully). I'm wondering what you didn't like about it, though. Curiosity, only.
All great responces guys/gals. Mine is a little different, I will never push my kids to hard at hunting. My oldest son (13) now has tagged along with me since he was a young one, but I beleive I pushed to hard a few times and he really doesn't want to have anything to do with it now, and it kills me! There were times when we should have left before "prime time" and I said "we have to stay til dark" in my quest to see more deer. I hope he comes around, I have learned from him and will take it much easier on the younger boy, but I think I screwwed things up as far as hunting with my oldest, I will more relaxed with them now. I have allways coached sports and sometimes haveing a stearn stand on things has gotten his attension, but it only last to a certain age, then they turn you off.
When the string slipped out of my hands, I received a nice goose egg on my arm. But otherwise the only thing that was hurt was my pride! At least it was my own old bow, and fixable.
This isnt anything ive ever done, but 2 things that I will never do. 1. I will never hunt an animal in a fenced in area. Only free roaming animals. 2. I will never hunt an animal that is on something to make its antlers grow. To me, there is absolutely no way one of these animals would be a trophy.
Hey AK, no offense brother but this thread is about something you have done and never will again, jsut trying to keep it on track, which is sometimes hard to do around here! LOL! See the "Draw the line" thread about what you posted above, some good stuff in there! LOL! Cheers!
I have one more.. I will never drink out of a high mountain stream ever again.. I got giardia/bever fever.. that stuff is bad news. I was 9 miles in on a flyfishing trip in the "Seven Devils" mountians above Hells canyon, I barely got out in time.
I have never really wanted mounts...I hunt in Georgia and am by no means a great huinter, but I have been fortunate to hunt some great properties and a bow only county. I have a small 6 (50") that my grandfather mounted for me. I put a long stalk on him at 13 years old and he suprised me by mounting him. I have a really nice 8pt (110 or so) when I was 14 that my grandfather again mounted for me. At the time it was in the top 10 for our county had we gotten it scored. And lastly I have a 10pt (130 or so) that came off a double my uncle and I pulled (his was over 150) with bows around an hour apart and less than 100 yards away. I watched his deer get shot. He knows I really do not care to mount my own deer (I love seeing others mounts though!!!!!) but ask me to mount it because of the story and I obliged. It has just never been my thing, I have a decent pile of antlers in the basement, and some deer that stack up very well around here...but just not my thing. I love whitetail mounts, antlers, picutres...everything about them, I just have no interest in mounting my own. I will how ever euro mount any deer from here on out.
Bow just seems to be too long. Hitting branches when stalking in thick stuff. I needed a bigger areas cleared for sitting on the ground which defeated the purpose of hiding when you had very little cover to begin with. Constantly snagging on grass, clover and weeds when stalking in the open or you are crawling to get into a spot. It was just too long, clumsy and a pain when I was trying to be stealthy. I just started to hate hunting with it. I hurt my back at work and put it away. Back healed but I just have had no desire to go back to it. For ground hunting which I do 98.3% of the time... a shorter compound just works a lot better for me. Tim
I'll never allow others to dictate or influence how I hunt or what I shoot ever again. I'll never venture to another state whitetail hunting until my home state tag is punched first, unless the trip if for reasons other than killing a buck (friends, etc). I will never give up the shotgun for turkey hunting. I will never let the question "why" limit me from now on....Ever since switching to the "why not" lifestyle, I've gotten to try a LOT of new areas and animals for bowhunting. Changing it up and challenging myself is sooooo much more interesting to me than sticking with one animal and challenging myself within that style of hunting.
