    Checked In.

Name is James (call me Twitch), I like Coors Light, Running/Cycling, Fishing and Hunting. I hunt in two counties in west central Indiana. 2 properties in Vigo Co. (60 acres and 1,700 acres) and 1 property in Clay Co. (90 acres). The bigger of the two properties in Vigo Co. is a leased property with several other lease owners.

I have food plots on a couple of the properties that I hunt, in fact the land owner on my property in Clay Co. spent $2,000 on getting a 3 quarter of an acre plot cleared this year. I planted it for him and did some erosion control stuff because the land is surrounded on one side by a lake. If your really interested, you can see some of those details here: https://www.qdma.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70394

I hunt Oct. 1 through January if that is what it takes and for the last 6 years that I have been bowhunting it has taken that. I have passed on multiple 110 to 120" bucks and have never taken a buck with a bow. Have taken an 8 point buck with a gun, for contest purposes that won't do any of us much good... I have passed on those bucks because I have much bigger deer on my properties I have just not been able to get them in bow range. Have taken a doe every year that I have been bowhunting. Not a trophy hunter by any stretch, get far greater enjoyment by sitting in the tree stand and watching many of God's creations - the woods in my sanctuary for 3 months out of the year, if I kill a buck great but it doesn't make or break my season.

Here are some of the bucks I will be chasing this fall - not posting them all because I have so many and I don't want some of the people on my lease who could or could not be visiting this site to see the bucks I have patterned up to this point.

Have a bunch of photos of this buck, I think I would probably give him a pass because I think he is probably only a 3.5 year old and probably doesn't meet my inches goals but he is pretty unique so it would just depend the circumstance.

Again, have a bunch of photos of this buck (over 200) he is a pretty solid 8 with a kicker on his left G2. If he sticks to his pattern he could be a good target for early October.

Got a bunch of both of these bucks. More photos of the big 8 and he is a better buck. But either one of these deer will be early October targets also. Have them pinned down to a pretty small area right now, we will see how it goes come October.

Yet again, a bunch of photos of this buck. The photo probably makes him look a little bigger than what he really is. I think he probably a 4.5 year old buck if not older and meets the age and inches requirement that I have in mind.

Don't have but three photos of this buck, all on one camera pass. He is a really nice 8 pointer that I'd love to get more photos of. He is in a really really good area for me as far as what my cameras are showing.

Like I said, probably have one or two more bucks but I am not willing to share them online. I run a lot of cameras and have for several years now. I am good about not checking my cameras any more than once every 2 or 3 weeks. After this weekend I won't check my cameras again until late September. Still have a about 6 stands to hang also here in the next week or two.

Look forward to be on y'all team - looks like we got an active group with as many that have checked in so far. I don't care who the captain is so long as it aint me. Been it before and don't need/want to be it again. lol

I'll update who has checked in when I get home. As for a new spot I found on the DNR's website. What do you all think of this? Blue is obviously the public boundary, red are parking/access locations, yellow are some decent looking areas. Gonna have to stomp around, but what are some of the areas that stick out to you? Kyle - don't know much about the Iowa River, can't imagine it has a really fast current in October and November? If not, do you have access to a kayake or any other boat? If so, it could change your whole approach with this property.

I have boated to stand locations before and the good thing about them is they almost never get hunted. No pressure = key to any good hunting area by my estimation. The best way to keep pressure down during entry and exit? Via a creek, lake, river, stream or ditch. So from just looking at this, if it was me I'd be burrowing a boat and finding a launch and dock spot. A lot of work? Heck yeah - but that is what it takes.

Been thinking of that too. A lot of the public land up here has a river or stream or creek around it, making some areas difficult to access. As mentioned I just graduated college, and between having to get a new truck, and choosing to get a dog in another month, my finances could be tight come season. I've definitely been thinking of checking Craigslist often or find someone who has one I could borrow. I believe my neighbor has an inflatable one, which could work. I usually take my backpack, lone wolf alpha 2 and sticks, and my Mathews.

I would burrow one before buying, make a friend - they aint using a boat in October in Iowa. It is a lot of work and can be inconvenient but could be well worth it. With it being a river ya prolly gonna need more than a trolling motor and that is starting to get costly and inconvenient so I totally understand your situation.

If you hang a set that deep its going to be safe, people aint going to get in and steal it. Its really hard to pintpoint stand locations on land you are familiar with let alone land you're not - you know the land better than us and it appears you have some good locations picked out.

If you find a boat, get a lock for it and lock it down and hide it in some brush so you don't have to haul it back and forth. Especially if you can fiind something cheap to buy. Again, a lot of it depends on the current speed - I use a small boat and ors on a local lake but thats a lot different.

Oh and don't buy a dog! Lol

If it were me i'd hunt that area closest to the river looks like a hot spot to me with options and the star at the bottom of the map looks like a open field i'd try that and look for deer signs and trails leading in

I'm going to try to make it out there and stomp around this afternoon. Have a phone call from one Farmer telling me to call another. Hopefully I get something locked up.

Waiting on two people thats great, anyhow the only thing I have left to do is plant at the food plot I dont have Much time left to do that and as far as cameras go I have one at the ridge and another that I will put at the food plot after planting. I thought it be cool to see the turnips and beans come up after planting plus get a chance to see whats coming in and out so thats gonna happen this weekend. I have some pics of doe but no bucks yet but still have high hopes that they will show up at the ridge once I get my mock scrapes up an goin. My stands are already up lanes cut etc so im ready minus the food plot being planted for the fall but I do have minerals at both locations.

Where's everyone hunting? Public or private land? I'm on public here but a few remote areas only a couple of us know about. This is one of the guys I'm hoping shows himself.

Planted 2 fairly large food plots last week, had turnips as well as other crops there last year. 1st year that we had turnips and the deer didn't start eating them until January which is after our season ends. I think that they just had never seen turnips before but when they started hitting them they were gone in just a few days. We planted some turnips again this year but not as many. We did not harvest a buck there last year so we are hoping some nice ones are there this year. One I called brows because his brow tines were almost as long as his G2's. It was odd looking at him from the side as it just looked weird. Very interested to see if he is still around, he should be awesome this year.

Mixture for me. Some public hunting and my brother and I purchased several acres this year and plan on getting on their to learn a few things about this new place that's for sure. 800 timbered acres surrounded by farms. We are excited about the opportunities, maybe not so productive this year because all the locals have used it as public hunting but the future potential is outstanding with proper management.
