I'm heading out in a bit for what is most likely the last sit of the season for me. I have been hunting off and on over the last 6 weeks, usually getting in about 3 sits a week. For most of December, deer sightings were slim, and then the snow came. Since snow has been covering the ground, deer have been moving all day long. Mostly does, and just a few small bucks. I have been holding out with a 2nd buck tag in my pocket hoping one of the shooters would show up. All promises are off this afternoon though. If I am lucky enough to have a doe present itself with a shot, I'm taking it. Regardless of the outcome of this afternoons sit, I will be closing the book on what has been a hell of a year for me.
The sun went down without an arrow being released, but I was offered shots by a button buck, and what appeared to be a 1.5 yr. old that had already shed it's antlers. I was able to glass 6 does at a distance and laid eyes on a buck that I have a photo of for the first time. The "Fork" buck showed himself around 4:30 briefly about 100 yards away before slipping back into the woods. The pic below was taken about a 1/2 mile from where I was set up at tonight. He should be a dandy of a buck next year. Looking back I am for the first time ending my season feeling good about what I was able to accomplish. I was one deer short in my freezer, but I still was able to harvest 3, including my largest buck ever. The only chance I have to get out again would be Thursday afternoon, but it is a VERY SLIM chance.
Yep, I'd say you had a pretty good year. And if I don't score this weekend on a monster, I'll owe you a dinner. Great buck you got back in Oct.
