My neighbor's son did this with a 45lb draw weight and a field tip. Just goes to show you a 70 lb draw weight isn't required to kill a deer. (Unfortunately, this pitchfork was laying on the ground two feet to the right of his target. He'd been using it to find his other lost arrows.)
Move the lad closer to the target, bad practice does not help get better, tell me the kid does not plan on hunting this fall.
that's a bit scary dbrown... I appreciate more people taking up bowhunting,.... but... we all owe it to the animals to be an ethical shot..
If he's missing the target my guess is that he's not using his peep sight correctly. Show him how to draw and anchor correctly. Show him how to use his peep sight, If you are anchoring and using your peep correctly you wont miss the entire target. You might miss the bulls-eye but not the whole target.
Someone needs to talk to him before he hits the woods... You should not be hunting if you are missing a target by 2 feet that doesn't move.
I have a nephew I gave a bow to and some equipment to brought him to my local bowshop and paid for a lesson from the owner. I knew the kid would not listen to me, well he didn't listen the the lesson either. He would practice at work and of course talk crap. Well my other nephew and myself had a conversation with the lad when he shot the same way and he wanted to hunt. Granted the kid was raised in Chicago has no woods sense and I gave him a Gille and he was going to ground hunt so he would have never ever got a shot but we explained to him he has no business buying a license and drawing on a deer.
Agreed, needs more practice time, also there is a difference in target shooting and the buck fever that infects most of us when we have a deer in front of us. If you are having trouble with a target it will likely be worse under hunting conditions.
Yep! They can be lethal. Now matter the speed or KE it takes shot placement to get the job done. Personally I would be tempted to cut his string before I let him hunt.
So many assumptions. The point of the thread was to show the power of a bow set at 45lbs. Nowhere does the OP say how old the lad is, how close his shots are, whether or not he plans to hunt this year or ever. Interesting how the discussion went south and missed his original point altogether. Thanks for sharing the information and photo. Pretty surprising the arrow held up through dense wood like that pitchfork handle.
