Received an email from one of our fish club members yesterday. Every year his church down in Madison County NY holds a wild game feast. It's their biggest fund raiser of the year. It's always been very popular and well done. Anything and everything is cooked and brought to the event. This guys son was given an elk hunt last year through one of these Catch A Dream hunts...only it wasn't Catch A Dream...some other organization. The kid has really got some medical problems. He killed a beautiful elk. So of course there was also elk at the feast. You name it, venison, ducks, bear... whatever... There were something like 100 pies to give you an idea how big this thing has grown. So as they are setting it up... IN SWOOPS the County Health Department. They declare all the food has to be removed and they cannot hold the event as there is no guarantee as to proper cooking procedures. Hundreds of pounds of food, hundreds of people and the county waits until an hour before to close it down. Now that right there is big brother with too much power. They want to do something go check some of these greasy spoon restaurants. Obviously someone on the health department doesn't like hunting and/or the church.
    Dumb people.

Are they even able to really come into a church/non profit type of event and shut it down? If that's the case they'd be able to do that to any type of benefit for anything that food is served.

That sucks but isn't surprising. :(

This is the nanny government watching out for us. It's just going to get worse too.

You should see the hoops I'd have to jump through to sell eggs at a nearby farmers market.

Not really. Here's a link to a local news station. IN this they mention a one time where Mad Cow disease was served.... but they don't say when that was. It wasn't in this county. They had held this pot luck thing for 28 years. You want venison or horse meat at McDees. How many Pot Luck diners have we all been to? How many Church suppers have we all been to. It's a crock of dodo

Once again some over zealous people trying to make a name for themselves or just ruin the day for everyone else. I'll donate the paper bags and the dog poop, can someone else cover the lighters and delivery?

While I don't agree with the decision, I wouldn't want to be eating meals made by 100 different strangers to begin with.

Last unit I was in before I retired had an annual "Wild Beast Feast" where everyone brought in food and cooked it at the unit. Then everyone who wanted to partake paid a $10 fee to eat a variety of food. The proceeds were donated to buy food for needy families for the holidays. We were able to take care of several families every year.

Is this not a private event and a fund raiser?

If your selling to the public, then I agree they have a right to do this. You would also be breaking the law.

In this case, it doesn't even sound to be legal on their part. Doesn't sound to be any different than a private get together, just with donations.

Yeah yeah... it's open to anyone who wants to go for it. They've done it for 28 years with no strong arm crap. Yes they were selling... it was a fund raiser for the church... just like it's been for 28 years with no problems. I suggest to you that any pot luck supper you may think of attending is the exact same thing. Being gay or ***** or whatever is OK... but don't eat my venison stew.

They did a similar thing a couple of years ago even in conservative Texas in my hometown for a big 4th of July celebration. Made all of the civic clubs and churches get permits, enclosed areas, etc. Made it cost prohibitive for most of them so they miss out on a fundraiser and the very thing that made it such a popular event is gone and so is the attendance.

If you dont want to eat a hamburger cooked on an open grill by the local church or Lions club then dont, but dont stop me in the process...its 4th of July for crying out loud.

That wouldn't fly here. You just don't mess with the people putting on potlucks, fall bazaars, pancake breakfast feeds and wild game feeds here. There are a lot of fundraisers, benefits and game feeds being put on all year long. Everyone brings something. There are a lot of damn good cooks in my area and the surrounding areas.

You want to see an angry mob... try that crap here. Someone would "accidently" get hurt as they got escorted out of the place.

You don't know what you are missing. Visiting with a lot of people and sampling all kinds of different food.
