I was given this compass many years ago. All I know about it is it was made in France, it has a brass case and cover and a locking mechanism for the direction pointer when the cover is put on. Please help age it and appraise it for me. Cover and base. Face and cover. Close up of face. Made in France.
Without a date on it, it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. It's not too terribly old as it appears to show magnetic and true north (Arrow & N on the compass). Take it to a antique dealer and have them appraise it.
This is the only one I could find for it, it sold back in 2007 for about $65. Says it is early 1900's. It is the only one that I could find that had a counter balance or whatever that is going through the needle pointing North. That's the one. I just found it on another antique site. http://www.goantiques.com/detail,antique-brass-pocket,2381967.html Actually the loadstone is on the south pointing end (or tail) of the pointer.
