It's way to early for these below zero wind chills. This morning's forecast said we're not supposed to get back up to the freezing mark until the end of next week. Hang in there.
Has anybody felt like a particular piece of ground is impossible to hunt? I don't think there's been a day where the wind hasn't been blowing in every direction.
I have gotten busted more this year then any other year including when I didn't take scent control as serious and just played the wind. After my sit yesterday I am taking extra steps starting today but wind swirl has way more to do with it for sure. Looks like here in Ohio we are supposed to get some steady west winds the rest of the week so hopefully that holds up.
Should be a great next seven days to hunt. I can hunt this thurs and fri, and also the following thurs and fri. Temps are starting to drop big time. Good luck guys. We drop a doe or two and possibly a buck or two and we are in the hunt.
Today was the last day of my vacation and Saturday is the last day for PA. But... this cold front is moving in so I'll be calling in sick Friday.
Well I decided to use a personal day tomorrow. We are supposed to get up to 3 inches of snow on Saturday so I plan on freezing my butt off in a tree. Saw several bucks cruising from the highway today.
I ended up taking a vacation day so I could hit it hard... Just absolutely brutal... My feet and toes aren't right - I've been cold before but I may have pushed it a little hard today :-) Saw some movement but based on what I saw - bucks appear to be on lockdown... Not the worst phase of the rut - but not quite as good as it was a week ago and will probably get a bit better again after most of the does start to get taken care of... Packersfan - have you tried nose jammer? it's kinda the polar opposite of what many of us have though about scent control the last decade or so (it actually smells a lot like vanilla) but since I started using it last year - I'm not sure I've even been busted... I actually had a doe literally running across a cut bean field at about 80 yards and as soon as she hit my 'downwind' she put on the breaks and walked directly to me (milled around for a minute or two at 10 yards before she continued on her way)...
Plan on trying to get out every day through next Thursday. We have 10" of snow up at the lease so hopefully the does will be hitting the cut corn field and pulling the big boys with them. Debating on where to hunt Saturday...either the lease where I know there are a few shooters around or some public hill country where I think I have the best chance to see a shooter. I am planning on going up to the lease Friday afternoon and will probably decide my Saturday sit by what I see on stand and what I have on my camera. Highs here have only been in the 20's with it getting down to the single digits at night.
I use the body soap/shampoo as my main soap starting mid oct through November - even on days I won't be hunting. Then I use the standard speed stick unscented antiperspirant during that same time... Normally don't use any type of cologne either for that month or so... Then each hunt I spray myself and backpack at the vehicle. Once i get to the stand i spray a little dab on my coat sleeves, neck area, hat, and each boot cuff - goal is to try and hit the main areas scent is escaping.... Worth a shot to see if you like it....
Hopefully you held up your end because I sure didn't. Another tough day. Cold and windy. Three does skirted just outside my shooting lanes this morning, then in the afternoon I tried an area deer have been coming through but of course they came through where I've been hunting. On my walk back to the house there was an average buck working through. Hopefully it's a sign that things are picking up because it's been extremely slow here. One more day. Last year I saw the only shooter of the year on the last day, so that'll push me through the cold day.
View from my perch today... Expecting 4 - 5... Don't like the cold but I love snow!! Good luck to everyone hunting!!
