Went out last night and braved the wind and cold. Lots of movement and the chasing has begun. Mostly younger bucks but I did see my shooter about 200 yards away following a doe. I think it's on.
Not really. Weird year for me. Seems like every time the weather gets right it warms back up and they go nocturnal again.
Man I've got several shooters on camera but for whatever reason I'm a step behind them this year. Hopefully it comes together soon.
I watched mine walk across the top of the field (260 yards way) last night, ignoring the three does in front of me..
I have not had much movement during the day. My buddy shot a nice 140 at one of our spots, but we both sat 2 days and only saw that 1 buck.
Glad to know I'm not the only one not seeing the nice bucks. It's just been does and younger bucks. I saw one nice buck monday night but nothing since.
Hey guys, finally able to check in. We've hunted a new lease in Alfalfa Co this year and the rut is in full swing right now. Sat yesterday and had a slow morning hunt, but got back in the blind around 1430 hrs and immediately had a big 8 come trotting right at us. He deviated his course of travel when he was about 40 yrds out to our west, most likely he saw me moving in the blind, trying to hurry to get a window open to have a chance to take a shot at him. Nothing until 1630 hrs, when a 6 pt came in and presented a broadside shot for my girlfriend (this is her first year hunting) and she sent a bolt, but missed him. Then literally less than 5 mins later this guy came in. Busted tines and all. I shot him as he quartered away from me at 30 yrds. He ran about 30 yrd directly away from me and crashed. There's plenty of BIG deer on this lease and lots of season left.
I sat from 1530 until dark and had a decent younger buck come in trying to run a couple of younger does at dusk. And I have noticed fawns out on their own. So yeah, gun season is going to put some numbers on the board. I'm out of work by noon tomorrow and on the stand by 1400. I will say one thing, those damp woods reeked of rutty buck tonight.
More bucks on the ground at our new lease..... mt dad knocked down a decent 8 and my uncle took an 8 that was a bit smaller. There's an incredible amount of deer on this property. My gf and I are headed back out there Sunday to see if we can get her on one!
Yeah we've had some great opportunities. The BIG shooter is still out there. The amount of deer in the western part of the state is crazy. We do see quite a few that need to be culled, so that is what I'm gonna try to do from here on out. Well that, and I'd like to take a decent doe still This lease is n Alfalfa Co. I HIGHLY suggest if anyone gets the chance to hunt in the area, JUMP ON IT!!!!!
We're home until the 20th. That'll be the next trip to our lease for us. Until then I'm working on Euro mounts of the bucks that my dad and I got earlier this season. Are any of you guys doing any good out there lately?
Hope everyone has had a chance to do some scouting. For those that utilize food plots, when is a good time to plant for a fall/winter plot? There is always a ton of food available from Summer to fall when acorns drop, so my goal is to have something green on the ground when the acorns dry up. I'm clearing about 1/8 acre for a micro plot, but I feel it would be most effective during late season when there is a food shortage.
Wheat or cereal rye in late September is the easiest and if allowed to establish will produce all winter.
Anyone after turkey's yet? How are the ticks so far? Headed out this weekend. Turkey hunt/scouting mission.
Season is finally open!!!! Has anyone done any good yet? We've been traveling for a few months, but are finally home. We still have the lease out in western OK, and have bought some land outside of Okmulgee as well. We're getting a late start, but it's all good. Headed out tomorrow to put blinds and cams on the new place and then we'll be going west NEXT weekend and getting in the woods to hunt finally. Hoe y'll have the best of luck this year!!!!!
