are being deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan? The wife and I were at a party/pig roast last night and I overheard some guy telling how his buddy is being deployed to Afghanistan and since he was going to miss deer season....he had already killed one. This guy apparently went spotlighting and shot an 11 pointer. Its now in his freezer and his brother is going to call it in opening day so it can be mounted. The "storyteller" also had a story of his own. He was in the woods earlier yesterday and had a buck that bedded down within 30 yards of him. He said he only had his .357 mag.pistol but seriously thought about taking him...BUT decided against it since season was so close. I didn't hang around for anymore stories but it seems no matter where I go...its some big achievement to kill a big buck out of season from a vehicle, spotlighting, etc.
I appreciate what he is doing for our country, but State biologists post season limits for a reason, to properly manage a herd. One deer won't make a difference, but like you said everywhere you turn you hear a similar story. I would'nt do it.
are being deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan? HELL NO!!!! The law still applies to him just like any other hunter. Except he is no longer a hunter, he's now a poacher. There is a difference. I have to work 5 days a week, so I don't get to hunt those days either. I still don't poach after dark.
I do not think that it is necessarily right but I can understand where he is coming from. If your family strongly depends on venison as a food source throughout the year and you as a supplier wont be able to supply, then the pressure is on. I would surely think that there would be a hunter out there that would be willing to donate a deer to his family.
Thanks for the service, but that's where it stops. Even if he had gone out HUNTING instead of jacklighting, I'd still have a problem.
I'm at a loss for words.... Thanks, but no thanks. If you not abiding by the rules like everyone else, then your just like everyone else. Unbelievable. Stunts like that irritates me.
I agree that is not acceptable, even if you are serving for your country you shouldn't be breaking the laws.
If he is caught speeding does he get pulled over? The law is the law. Thanks for your service but poaching is still illegal.
Is it wrong? Absolutely. Would I do it if I was in a similar situation where I knew I was going to miss the entire season for whatever reason? I wouldn't even consider headlighting but in daylight hours and a conventional method a couple of weeks before the season opener? I might. I wouldn't try and justify,it would be purely for selfish reasons, but I might.
I'm sure his family will do just fine without him around. I just think it's his cop-out for illegally killing a big buck. I agree but I'm not hanging out with them. The party was for a couple Megan and I know that are getting married in two weeks.
Imagine if everyone killed a deer out of season, at dark or any other time they felt life got in the way...we would not have any left. Hell, I got to work in the morning instead of hunt, so why not go kill one here in a few...he knows what he signed up for. My best friend on this planet and his brother (whom is also like a brother to me) have been working over seas for the past several years. They get to hunt a few days a year total, and believe me no one on these boards or the planet enjoys hunting like them...but do they poach, or does it even cross their mind...NO.
Tell it like this...I was at a party last night and a guy said he had limited time to hunt this year.....so he shot an 11pt at night a few weeks ago. His buddy is going to wait until the opener and call it in.
Have to go with what most are thinking already. The law applies to everyone regarless if you are unemployed or being deployed. This country has not had a draft since the early 70's so anyone in the service these days joined by choice. If hunting was so important and that big a part of his life then he shouldn't of joined.
I suck at understanding the smiles:D, I just wanted to make sure no one used the service as a crutch to side with him. The rest of my post explains why I feel that way and have ties to these situations.
