So, a while back, I was shooting at a local indoor range, and a dad with two kids came in. They rented two smaller kids recurve bows, and he (dad) began to "teach" them how to shoot.... Two kids, shooting left and right handed (one shot left, one shot right).
Then they stared shooting. The kid that was shooting right handed. All of their arrows are going off the wall, and around the 10 arrow stop. The kid shooting lefty, all of their arrows are crossing my lane, and landing somewhere else..lol.

So, I started taking breaks, and watching them.

The dad was having them nock the arrow, on the opposite side of the bow... Is this wrong? or is this a preference thing?!?!! Looked pretty damen uncomfortable to shoot like that... I thought it was just stupid to me, but then I was watching some tv show, or something the other day, and the person on there was doing it too.. (not an archery show or anything, just some randomness on the tube....)

I just have to ask. Has anyone heard or seen this happen?

Just in my defense. When the dad stepped out of the range, I told the kids to try putting the arrow on the other side, and shoot... It worked. They were hitting the targets right away. lol. but the dad must have said something to them, cuz they went back to it?! WTF??? I doubt they grow up to be archers.

I have no idea of what you're describing?

Unless it's a primitive bow.....the bow only has one shelf/rest option.

It's like an ambidextrous <SP?> bow for kids to learn on. Never seen them?

If I hear what you're saying, correctly, it's shot like a primitive bow....in which the archer utilizes his index finger as his/her "rest". OR.....I suppose the top of the grip could have a shelf/rest that works for either handed archers.

In any case, the arrow's only designed to be shot from one side. I agree.

With the arrows they're shooting, I'm not sure it's got anything to do with the paradox. It's more of a mechanics issue. Honestly, I think all traditional archers should start out shooting with a vertical bow. Even doing this (what you decribed ......with this bow), wouldn't create a problem. But aiming would "seem" to be a Beeatch.

THink about it......the inherent release off the fingers would create a myriad of shelf./riser issues, if you shot off the wrong side.

Like this one. The shelf, is made for either left or right. But they were just using opposite side of the shelf, as one would normally use. It was crazy. But like I said, once they started shooting from the same side of the bow that they were on, they were hitting the target consitantly. Not bad for their first time shooting! I just feel bad that the dad wasn't really teaching them properly. Then again, maybe that was his plan (to not want them to get into archery), and I ruined it by giving them confidence. lol. Ohh well.

I've saw many of these right/left handed bows around through out the years. The dad hasn't a clue what he was doing with the kids. When they were hitting good/better they were shooting from their dominant eye side. When they weren't hitting good they were shooting from their non dominant eye side.

You steered them In the right direction more then likely MNKK, dad didn't.

Shooting from the 'wrong' side is standard practice for those using a pinch type release/thumb release. Was the guy Korean?? ;)

But I would bet with 90% certainty that the guy just had no idea how to teach these kids. :(

BTW, we use a bunch of those bows for teaching.

This guy appears to know how to teach. ;)

They weren't facing the wrong way. They were putting the arrow on the other side of the bow! lol. I think Christi got what I was trying to say.

I was just wondering if anyone actually shot like that. The equivalent would be shooting a left handed bow, as a right handed shooter, just shooting, and facing normally (left foot forward, drawing with right arm?)

It was just wierd to me. I have never seen anything like it.

No he wasn't Korean. Just weird.

Same kinda bow i got my kids started on and yeah i know exactly what you meant , they have a shelf either side . The guy obviosly wasn't an archer himself , but it ain't rocket science , my kids were shooting off the RIGHT side of the shelf with no tuition at all .
