I think I may need to carry a few more calls. Too many times I've heard guys say they kept trying different calls until one finally worked.
I normally just have a glass or slate & a few mouth calls.

My favorite call is whatever the guy with me has. Whenever I try to call it most closely resembles a chicken being anally raped by a donkey.

Well here is my take...What call you use is more dependent on your own experiance and skill level.....I'm serious about turkeys and have been for years....I carry every call known to man....but I'm actually competent with two or three.

Calling is important but it is no more important then being in the right place at the right time.

The more you go the more you learn.. If you are starting out get comfortable with one or two calls... and go for it. The guys I've started into turkey hunting I get to get one of the wooden quaker boy push pin calls.....I teach them the basic rhythm and tell them to get were the birds are and give out an occassional three-4 some times 5 stroke call....

    It works suprisingly well....

    Keep it simple...especially at first

I carry a slate and 3 or 4 diaphragm calls. Decoys are never a sure thing where I hunt. I've had gobblers walk right in among them that came in with no calling. I've had 'em hang up and seemingly avoid decoys. I've used 3 hens & a jake or just 1 hen.

My favorite/most successful call is a box call made by a friend in Morgan county IN. that I used to hunt with. He gave it to my brother and I a few years ago, and I'll choose that over any of my other calls. Especially for when I need something that can get very loud when birds are gobbling back really far off and hesitant...but can also be softer/quieter when need be.

As far as mouth calls, I'm new to that game and have only been doing it for 2 years or so. As a beginner with mouth calls, I'm glad I took the advice of some people on here/the other site, on just a simple 3-pack of Quaker Boy calls. "Old Boss Hen" is what I think they're called. Easier to learn with than a couple others I've tried.

Man I can't wait until spring :D Good luck to all you turkey hunters

    I'm going to do both.....

Hopefully my luck will continue and I'll roll one early...then go strictly bow after that.

    You ?

Same here I think.Never got a shot with my bow yet,so that will be the driving force that makes me go mostly bow. Slingblade

To answer the question here-I carry diaphragm, slate, box call.I mostly use diaphragm and slate. But when it's not working I'll switch to try and find what he wants to hear.
