It finally hit me today. :D Opening day in PA is on Saturday, and the weather and wind is forecasted to be absolutely PERFECT for one of my favorite evening spots to sit. I'll probably sit over the nanny whacker for the morning, but likely won't shoot at much there in anticipation of my evening hunt. I've got a 2-3 acre patch of young hemlocks (the kind you have to be on all 4 to see more than 10 yards) that is always used as a buck bedding area every year. Last turkey season I bumped a stud out of there, and found lots of his tracks (solid 3" wide tracks) and his single lone bed worn into the ground. The hemlocks come to a hard transition break line right into mixed oaks and beech. Perpendicular to this transition break line is a stream with a steep bank that sort of brings everything to a point. The oaks and beeches are dropping like crazy this year, and we are forecasted to have the perfect S/SW wind I need to hunt this spot. I'm pretty psyched right now, and somehow have to manage to get a pile of work done at the job between now and then. Anyone else got their spots picked out? :D
Good luck Matt, tick tock it's coming. Ah yes, the nanny whacker, should be a great sit. I haven't totally made up my mind yet, I'm thinking I'm going to my "hollow" where I took my Halloween buck last year. I usually save it for the rut but I'd like to see what's going on there early morning, early season. Thing is, it'll be a long sit, food sources are a ways off and the bedding area is there BUT, they not be using this particular bedding area until they feel some pressure. I'll likely have to sit til noon and may not see a deer until 10:00 but it's usually bucks. Evening, either my core area or here at my house, the field here is beans this year and the lower corner is isolated, they love that. Good luck Matt and Dan.
I'm anxious, but not really sure where I will sit. I'd really like to get a doe, but feel I should at least set up in hopes for a buck in the evening.
Rob, do you rub the trees in your "core" area?! Hint: Do NOT make a scrape in your carpet (or anywhere in the house), you'll not get the desired results! Good luck to you guys!
South winds are the best for me as well. Gonna be a perfect night to sit my plot that I have worked so hard on. In the morning, I will be on a nanny trail filming/hoping for a double with my father in law at the cabin land. South winds are great there too. Txt messages will be flying. If I am real lucky, I will land a cameraman in my brother in law for the evening sit.
good luck Matt, sounds like a Great spot ps: I showed my 10 year old the G2G camp football spike video today :D he watched it 10 times :D Thanks for the entertainment :D
Not yet Greg, I"m only in prerut. :D I have some boundry scrapes that I've been working but nothing in my core area yet but I have a feeling your right. :p
Its been killing me all week. I'm leaving work in a few minutes and taking tomorrow off as well. Wind won't be good for my best sets but I have others that will be good for the south winds we expect Saturday. Good luck!
Yep, I'm VERY ready. While a SSW isn't the best for where I'm hunting, YET, I'm going to try my nanny stand as well in the morning. It's one of my best morning stands and can be hunted with everything but an E or SE wind. In the evening, if the wind holds, I may have to sit on the finger in between two corn fields where I almost connected on a nice 8 last year. I'm not too confident they will be in there yet due to the acorns, but with that wind, it may be my safest bet.
I am SOOOOO ready .... been shooting my FP for a long time.... tonight I shot my broadheads and they are right with my field points ... I love this bow ..... I can't wait!!!
