What do you think guys, whats your breakdown of Sonnen and Silva ... I think his busy approach, solid chin, strong wrestling and ground and pound style gives him a shot if he can get past the initial onslaught of strikes by Silva. I think Silva is ripe for an ass beating, or maybe thats just my emotions talking... hahaha.. anyway like to hear what you guys think.
In my opinion no but theres always a chance. Everyone always talks like there going get in the cage with him and beat his @ss and he talked himself up on the last paperview about it. But I have yet to see someone go in there and not be afraid of him when it comes down to it. I agree he does need a little beating but i dont know who's going to do it.
I think he's got a better-than-average chance if he doesn't run into a knee on his shoot. I don't think Chael will show him any undue respect whatsoever, and I'll be curious to see how he handles Anderson's initial two minutes of monkeying around or if he has to wait for him to get that out of the way as most others have been forced to do as well. While it's well-known that Silva is a BJJ black belt, I seriously have not been duly impressed with his guard; it's very loose, and he's taken a beating in it before. I think Chael showed against Nate that he can stay extremely active in his opponents' guard and continue delivering some brutal ground and pound without wearing out. He's also a pretty smart fighter and will hopefully be able to recognize Anderson's attempts to posture up and slap on a triangle or position for an arm bar... Again... like you, though, Troy... perhaps my emotional wishful desires coming out. as I'd like nothing more than to see him beat the hell out of Silva.. :D It all depends on if he can take him down, and like he said, he's got two national championship placques on his wall that says he can. We'll see.
No. He lost 3x times to Jeremy Horn. Anderson's take down defense has gotten MUCH better since he fought Henderson and Sonnen's striking isn't good enough to make the takedown unexpected. I think Sonnen has got the wrestling credentials, but I think it's going to take a good striker (not necessarily better) with Sonnen type wrestling to beat Silva. Someone that can at least hold their own standing, and make the takedown unexpected by mixing it up and changing levels. Someone also needs to run out there and punch Silva first while he's feeling out his range and figuring out timing like he always does in the first 30-60 seconds of a fight. With that said, I'd love to see Sonnen beat him. Just don't think he's the one to do it. Maybe he will surprise me?
very good points by all... thanks for sharing, hope to hear more of the MMA guys chime in on this one..
I don't see it happening either. Silva has been my favorite MMA fighter for awhile... the guy is just a freak in the octagon. I didn't see his last fight but from what I have heard it wasn't pretty. I am not sure where that came from, but just to play devils advocate... the guy gets bashed because guys get in the ring with him and pretty much run from him... maybe (and this is a big maybe) the show-boating is an attempt to get guys to actually come after him. Who knows for sure? All I know is that the vast majority of his fights have been more like artwork than a brawl and the guy is just that damn good.
I want to see GSP kick the crap out of Silva!!! I am pretty sure that Silva will hand Sonnen his A$$ on a platter, but I hope I am wrong.
That wasn't it at all in the last fight, Jason... he ran from Maia continually -- and at one point actually hid behind the ref. It was BEYOND embarassing, and he should have been handed a DQ warning for his antics and if he continued further he should have actually been DQ'd and had the belt stripped from him. No doubt, he is one of the most talented fighters to ever enter MMA and I don't purport to take that away from him, but he embarassed himself and the sport he represents in his last showing.
I honestly can't stand Silva.... But I don't see him losing to Chael Sonnen. I second the of GSP and Silva, that would be awesome.
Sonnen has a chance if he gets the fight close. Against the fence and to the ground. Sonnen has a great chin and is tough as nails and he will need every bit of it against Anderson who use to be my favorite fighter. But the lack of respect he showed Maia by yelling and swearing at him blew my mind and ans he lost me as a fan but I still respect his talents. I believe he is the best stand up fighter in the game. His movement is so fluent. I love GSP but I don't think he would get the win over Anderson either. GSP loses greatly in the striking and lacks the power to finish Anderson on the ground. He could win a close decision but GSP is not known for his iron chin. Anderson via TKO. GSP would not be a very large middleweight he's only 5'11 I think and Silva would have a reach advantage.
I hate watching GSP fight!! i just hate it. i know he is an amazing fighter and athlete but his fights are so boring, imo all he does is lay on them for the whole fight and he wins, which is considering winning the fight yeah but really. Idk when he actully last finished a fight? anyone know? granted the last silva fight was ridicolus but he usually puts on a show at least.
In his last 12 fights, he's stopped 6 of them including BJ Penn, Matt Serra, Matt Hughes (2x), Sean Sherk, and Frank Trigg. That's a pretty impressive list of people to stop IMHO, and I still don't think we've seen him in his prime yet. With that said, I don't think GSP is the man to beat Silva either. If they fought 10 times he'd definitely get a few wins in there, but I think it will take a carbon copy of him, just naturally 20-30lbs heavier to beat Silva. GSP's striking is good, is wrestling is even better..........but his ability to transition between the two and catch people off guard is outstanding. That's what it's going to take to beat Silva. Henderson almost did it but got flustered and lost his ground control. I think GSP lacks the physical size to really maintain ground control with Silva and would fall into the same trap........either getting submitted on the floor or Silva would be able to get up and keep most of it standing.
Thanks Greg, I must have got his last two or three fights mixed up together. It is really sad to see as he is my favorite fighter, but there is absolutely no need for those antics. It is actually rather shocking because he was always one of the "professional" guys in the octagon. He seemed to respect every guy he faced, and it is hard to believe how he is acting now. The last PPV I watched with him was when he faced Forrest. I will be getting UFC117 and if his actions aren't up to his usual class... he will no longer be the guy that I cheer for. The one thing that scares me about this fight is that lately... no matter how good of a fighter you are you CAN loose. Look at Machida, he was considered "untouchable" but lost his belt, same goes for BJ.
That's what makes mma so great, one flaw at any moment can ruin your day... or career, MMA fighters are truly skilled human beings.
