Bruce I promise as soon as I can start shooting again I promise I am taking the challenge.
First I have to start my regular shooting again and make sure I can even shoot still once I am dialed in I am all in on it.
Brand new arrow with BH in. I will loose nothing by missing I will be gaining the knowledge of know wether or not I can make my shots count.

    Huh? Failure for what?

I agree. But the mindset when the arrow leaves the string is that deer is 100% dead. At 50 yards you cant say that. Heck you even admitted it by saying more times than not you'll make that shot.

You act like you're the only one that can make a shot at 50 yards. You're in pretty good company with people that can shoot bows. A lot of (most) people here can drill a target on a consistent basis at 50 yards. A lot could also "probably" kill a deer at 50 yards. They just won't chance it on a moving living target because it's not in their minds a guaranteed kill. That's why the arrow doesn't leave the string. Could we kill it? PROBABLY. Probably/ more times than not, isn't good enough imo.

Agian NO SELF BLAME IF YOU MISS is what I said.
Also I never said that there is no one else that can not make the shot
Also when I make any shot I am never 100% confident that that deer is dead or hit pefect.
I am 100% of my own abilities and that the deer is dead when my hands are on it. Other then taht never 100%

I agree with you MP. If I miss the first thing I blame is myself. Then I take some practice shots to see if something got bumped and usually it is all good. lol. My max range is 40 yds and that is because I dont practice enough to feel confident to shoot a deer at 50 yds. I'm confident I could kill a deer at 50 though because I practice out to 60 everytime I shoot and get good groups but I always have one arrow a few inches from the others. That is why I wont shoot a deer out that far. If I felt confident enough to shoot 50+ yds I would but at this time I dont. I will never frown upon someone who can take an ethical shot at this distance. Who am I to say you arent prepared enough to make the shot?

    Thank you dan.
All I want is my feelow hunters to be completely honest with themselves.
I can miss a shot at 10 yards too. But im not gonna stop hunting because of the what if factor.

Its called hunting not killing. Everyone misses and that makes it more fun. If you are so worried about not being 100% on whether you will kill or no than there is no sense hunting. I have made a 10 yd shot poorly and never found it or had it run long ways and Ive shot deer at 40 that ran 20 yds. Its part of the hunt.

Couldn't agree more but why Is It then that bowhunting Is turning Into a shooting sport? I don't really care how AWESOME of a shot you are. You can't tell me you know that animal Isn't going to move. A second or 2 Is allot of time. Speed don't kill deer unless your shooting a gun. I don't care what anyone says. All speed does In today's compounds Is make people think they can shoot much farther.

Exactly. 1 step by a deer and you could hit the shoulder or the guts. Thats all it takes. You have to be ready for anything and some things are unavoidable.

Couldn't agree more. It really irks me when people say " my bow is so fast that no deer can jump my string". BS! The sound of speed is approximately 1,100 ft/s depending on your elevation. Now, when you factor in a bow shooting 300 fps the whole picture becomes pretty clear.. Deer can move, and move fast.

I am certainly not telling anyone what they should do. But my curiosity is wondering if you do practice for all situations, how do you practice the deer reacting to your shot? And how do you account for any adrenaline that you may have even if it is just a little. Sometimes I personally have much more adrenaline then other times and for no particular reason that I can pinpoint. If you don't get that feeling then you are really missing out. And what about a little of both? A little nerves and a Bucks reaction? To say a deer is 100% dead just comes off as kinda.. well you know what I mean. If your confident and honestly proficient to make a ethical shot with the presented situation or scenario then have at her. I think any bowhunter should know this and practice this. This is why it is different from firearm hunting.

So are you saying firearm hunting is always a 100% kill on every shot?? I don't think anything is 100% guaranteed in the woods, no matter the weapon. However, if your going to fire an arrow/bullet/bolt/etc.. you better be 100% in your own mind that you can make the shot.

Theres nothing you can do is what I was saying. No one knows what the deer will do as soon as you pull the trigger. As a hunter it is my responsibility to be as accurate as I can be, the rest is in natures hand. And for the adrenalin thing I just try to stay as calm as possible, which is impossible. I love hunting for that rush!

Exactly. Nothing is a 100% guarantee, anything can happen. BUT in your mind at the moment of truth you have to be saying to yourself that deer is 100% dead. I just don't think you can say that at 50 yards (no matter how good of a shot you are at that range). But hey.... hope you guys flinging em that far kill them all. Good luck.

NO doubt that a deer can dump I have seen BIg bucks dump down to their belly on the ground when they hear the string slap even at 20 -25 yards. I do not disagree that a miss can happen. As a hunter we can only practice and prepare for the hunt to the best of our own abilities..
Here is a question for everyone that says a deer can move way to fast to take a 50 yard shot. (if you are a competent and capable hunt not someone just flinging arrows)
Do Squirrels have just as fast of a reaction to the string slap or faster?
Here is a squirrel I shot at 35 yards. I have to tell you I thing they are really a bit faster then a deer and obviously a much smaller kill zone.

I get what your saying but a deer squirrel comparison doesn't really prove much. Almost any shot that hits a squirrel with an arrow is lethal so the size of the kill zone is pretty much the squirrel. I don't think reaction time is the only worry either, 300 fps is not really that fast in the big scheme of things and the time it takes that arrow to travel a deer can just move it doesn't necessarily have to "jump" your string. I am very confident shooting, 50 yards is not that far but the variables that come with it make a shot at a live target much more complex.

What's a good broadhead group at 50 yards, 3-4"? How about a deer kill zone, how many inches is that, 12ish(pie-plate)? That gives you about 4 inch on either side of your group for error. What if it's 53 yards or 47 yards? Think that matters? Perfect conditions, how often does that happen? Broadside deer, feeding, relaxed just standing there at 50 yards looking away from you for an indefinite amount of time, oh and you're perfectly relaxed too. You don't have to rush, the deer isn't moving away from you or about to exit your shooting lane, no other deer eyes to contend with, no crosswind or elements to deal with. Does a 10-12 mph crosswind change your POI with a broadhead at 50 yards? All this practice people are doing at 50 yards I'm sure is with broadheads, hunting clothing, and from a stand similiar to their hunting set-ups, right? If you were shooting real deer under hunting conditions and you took 100 50 yard shots what do you think your recovery rate would be? 90% or higher? If not, what's an acceptable recovery rate? Inside 30 yards under real world hunting conditions I know I can kill 90% + deer I take a shot at and that allows for the occasional miss or poor shot, if I stretch that out to 40 or 50 yards I know that number would change significantly and I'm not willing to toss that up as just part of the hunt when I have 100% control over it.

Just my .02, to each their own.

Hey New61375 you should read all of the previous posts first. Then post a comment.
I pratice with every variable I can produce except for the deer.
Also I practice with BH but grouping is for braqging and costs arrows.
I pic my point of impact and shot that if I am off by more then an 1" I consider it a bad shoot.
Also if you go back you can see the deer I shot at 42 yards (8 less then 50) and see the shot placement.
Now that being said I woul not shot a a deer in less then what I felt was a perfect set up and that was the original ? that everyone has lost track of.

Please read and know what you are commenting about people do not make judgements on the last post and blow smoke just to speak out. ( that is not pointed at anyone person)

Here is a quote I took from another page of a great hunter on this site.

"One shot - One Kill - My decision - I decide!"
I could'nt have said it better
