So if he's at 60 are you shooting?

IMHO people are pushing the bar far to much these days. Everyone is wanting to be the next chuck adams and they are not afraid of making mistakes to get there. The thrill of the hunt and harvest has lost all meaning for most and has only become the kill.

People have a hard time setting a shot distance limit and holding to it. If you have to question it all then unhook the release and admire the animal. I suggest that some of you take the 50 yard broadhead challenge.

    Hunting is not a competition.

I have always liked this quote...

"An archer tries to see how far away they can hit a target, a bowhunter tries to see how close they can get and not miss" ;)

I really like this quote. As an archer I find that it is more fun to shoot farther out than at my hunting distance. However as a hunter I want to be as close as I can get. This is where the challeges lie thus making it fun and exciting. I honestly see it as more of a challenge to shoot any animal at a close range due to many factors. Yes puting the arrow in the right spot at a great distance is a challenge but, there are way more factors that come into play when you are so close to a deer.

Can we not all just agree that we have different opinions based on different experiences, ecperience and who knows what else and drop the long shots on a deer threads.

If we don't reply it will dye.

I'd rather shake a bowhunters hand on not taking a long bomb shot In a hunting situation.

Ok soon my 50 cal i used to have to shoot the max range was approx 1 mle. So if i saw a rag head setting an ied infront of a convoy at a mile and an 1/8 I should'nt take the shot? Every weapon has its normal limits it is up the the shooter to know how far and when he can push and extend those limits. I will remove all of my pins except one and only shoot deer at 20because i shouldnt be able to shoot over 20 yards. Thats just as bad as peta telling us not to hunt at all.

I'm not sure I completely comprehend your post, but I will reiterate it as best I can.

I am well aware of what the 50 BMG is capable of, I sell firearms for a living. For example, Craig Harrison has TWO confirmed kills at 2.47KM (8120ft). The weapon was designed for such shots, if any further you go to tank and aircraft artillery. Now if you see an enemy ("raghead") setting explosives for YOUR convoy a touch out of your range, I'm shooting no questions asked. Comparing warefare to bowhunting is like comparing elephants to orange trees.

Is a bow capable of killing a deer at 150 yards? absolutely. Howard hill once killed a bull elk with his longbow at 125 yards. IMHO, however, I feel as bowhunters we should try to preserve to sanctity and essence of bow hunting. It's not a shooting or killing competition. If you feel the need to shoot long distances go to the gun, again, my opinion.

I am not chastising you in any way for shooting that far, just not my cup of tea. In fact I applaud your skills of an archer for feeling the confidence that you can accurately and consistently place shots in a kill zone at 50-55. It's impressive. If you wish to shoot that far go for it, its your choice and your consequences to deal with.

Now, as far as comparing my post to PETA. Blasphemy.

What I am comparing to PETA is the band wagon of posters that all say that a 50 yard shot shold never be taken.
    Not you earlier post.
Also you are reffering to a british corpral not an army sniper. I could never take anything away from Craig for what he did and was able to accomplish. But I used an M107 with an EFFECTIVE range of 2000 yards (1829 m) Which is 1.1363 miles for those that do not know. My personal effective accurate range with my M107 was 7/8 of a mile.
BUt I promise I would have taken the shot too even if it was 1 1/4 miles.
I just hate the wagon trains people put them selfs on no one should sell them self short because it the " right thing to do" or what the norm is.

oh sorry no I would not take a 60 yard shoot either country.
Also if I am lucky enought to be healthy enough to hunt this year I will not shoot over 30 because I have not had time to practice and rebuild myself. Hell I might not shot over 5 lmao

Agreed. And I am guilty of this. This is just a fairly touchy subject for me. I also work the archery counter where I work and hear horror stories every year of people trying to push into areas their shooting does not belong. Again I applaud you for your shooting abilities, it is something to be admired.

Basically when it boils down to it, I may not agree with longer shots, but if someone is confident and secure enough to do it, all the power to them. Beauty of the hunt is in the eye of the beholder. Sorry if I came off cross.

And, I thank you for your service, Sir. It is greatly appreciated.

And I can respect this as well. You recognized that you have not been shooting up to par and have adjusted your hunting accordingly. Great traits in a hunter.

Where is the band wagon? What I see multiple post of is people that have had first hand experience with band shots as a result of someone "not selling themselves short" and squeezing the release at longer ranges than they are actually effective at.

Never have and never will. I know inside 25 yards the deer is 100% DEAD (barring something unforseen or malfunction of equipment). 30 yards = 95% sure its dead, 35 yards = 93% sure its dead, etc.... Can I make the shot? sure I could. Can I make it 100 out of 100 times? No chance. For me as soon as the percentage of dead deer goes below 100% is when I pass on the shot. At 50 yards there is too much that can go wrong.

I know I can make ALL clean shots at 25 yards and in and no bad ones.

Soory to tell ya ny but the first thing I noticed in your post is the is no self blame for failure.
Secondly there is never a 100% dead deer guareenty no matter how close or weapon.
So if that is how you feel then why even hunt.
I really think people are saying it's just to far in general because they themselves do not feel comfortable with the shot or just plain can not make it. When a deer is out at 35 plus yards it takes longer for that deer to hear the string slap with a bow shooting 290 to 300 feet per sec his reaction time is a bit slower.
A 50 yard shot with my bow shooting right at about 286 feet per sec will take about 1 sec to reach that deer.
I do not nor will ever be an advocate of anyone shooting a deer or any animal with out consistant practice and not just knowing but admitting their own limits.

I agree ben but if you read all of them you can see the politicaly correct answers more then not.
when I was able to shoot still I would pratice everyday wearing tee shirts, winter coats, sweatshirts, gloves , hats,
etc... Always to play out different effects my clothes can have on me.
I would shoot out of a blind that I never even use just to pratice in case.
I have even set up my sprinkler in my yard sat under it on a windy day to simulate a crappy day.
I really appreciate the advice that can be given on here but I can never agree with the standard others try to make others follow.
I encourage people to pratice beyond thier norm and comfort so that when they are out in the field the norm is alot more comfortable.
I am not the best shot on this forum but I do shoot to the best of my OWN abilities.

If 100% of shooters with 40+ yards max range would do things like this I doubt these arguments would exist. Unfortunately, you make up, IMO from reading these things for years, about 5% of 40+ yard max range shooters. The other 95%, IMO, shoot standing flat on the ground, great conditions, warm up to the long shot and still only make 7 out of 10 at 40+ yards. But they hit it "most of the time" so that is their max range.

These threads are part of the reason I came up with the max range challenge. As you can see in the most recent thread, everyone wants to do it until they have to risk losing an arrow. They want to do it if only paper is involved but do not have the cojones to use metal or wood and risk losing an arrow. Yet, when that deer comes into their "max range" they will risk it then. Sorry, but that is pathetic. If a person is not confident enough in their ability at their max range to "risk" an arrow then they have no business in shooting at animals at that range either.

I am all for anyone shooting at whatever range they are 100% confident in shooting from 10 to a 100 yards. If you are confident (because of your practice habits and skill level), fire away. Just don't lay a bunch of BS on me when I ask why you aren't shooting at wood or metal when attempting the max range challenge. Bring confidence in your skills to the max range, not BS.
