The oil spill in the Gulf has caused wildlife habitat more than just money.....wait it's all about greed and money. http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/where-fish/2010/04/marshall-why-louisiana-oil-spill-will-be-worse-exxon-valdez-disaster?cmpid=enews043010
Yeah...I was actually just about to post about whether or not anyone else is keeping track of this. This has the potential to be worse than Katrina for the Gulf Coast. This will SEVERELY impact all the fishing industry in the Gulf, as well as wildlife, as well as the Oil & Gas industry. Be prepared to start paying premium for seafood for the next couple of years. And since I'm in the environmental industry, I will find out Monday if I will be heading down there to assist in clean-up for an undisclosed amount of time...
Actually it's about people's livelihood. Do you realize how much this will impact the Oil & Gas industry and fishing industry in the Gulf? Do you realize how many people's jobs will be affected by this?
It's a dam shame, I do not understand why they would allow them to drill in the Gulf without some sort of backup plan, they say it can take up to 90 days to cap. The Gulf won't recover for generations to come.
That's to drill the relief well. Some type of containment system would probably take a lot less time, probably a few weeks.
Potential to release 50,000 barrels a day Jesus Christ. I don't think the majority of America understands what is happening right now to the Gulf Coast. This could be the equivalent of 4 Exxon Valdez incidents a week for several months!
Oil I do understand, it's a catastrophic! I don't think people really understand the impact, that's why I posted this. But the reason why there's 1000 of rigs in the cost is for money! We just destroyed the marine ecosystem, seagrass ecosystems, migration patterns, food source and god knows what else for the next 5 years and some species indefinitely! The way I understand this, is there is oil nearly a mile deep in some places! This is more than just a "spill". You spill milk, or cup of water....that's a spill. I just can't wrap my head around how much wildlife is being affected by thousands and thousands gallons of oil. I understand the financial side of humans, we can survive and get by, but wildlife...this isn't good.
And so we can have plastics, electricity, and drive our beloved cars. People complain about our dependency on foreign oil, but don't want us drilling in the Gulf either? Can't have it both ways. This is true. Oil floats on water, so you understood wrong. The wildlife is being affected, but I'm sorry, I'm more concerned about the families of the 11 workers who died, and the thousands upon thousands of families whose livelihoods directly depends on the seafood, fishing, oil & gas and tourism industries of the Gulf Coast. I'm also very concerned that it seems that 95% of the US does not care one bit about what's happening in the Gulf right now. Or maybe they don't understand. This is 10x worse than Katrina. Friday night at my favorite local coffee shop, I overheard a conversation between two college aged girls. One asked the other where the oil was coming from, and the other said "I don't know, Saudi Arabia...?" When I informed them that the oil was coming from an oil rig that exploded in the Gulf, the other said "There are oil rigs in the Gulf? The Gulf of Mexico?" I just stared at her, shook my head, and walked away. How college aged kids can be so out of touch with the world surrounding them is beyond my comprehension.
Here is my idea for a safety system for these type of scenarios. When the pipe comes out of the ground at the seabed, a actuated valve must be installed that requires either power or air to keep it open - once the power or air is cut, the valve immediate closes. Above that is a designed "weak spot" in the pipe that is designed to sever the pipe if a certain amount of stress is detected. The idea is to control where the pipe breaks when something like is going on now is happening. Anybody makes any money on my idea will send 50% of all proceeds immediately to me....:D
while certainly an ecological disaster, I have every confidence that the earth will survive and everything will return to normal... our world is surprisingly resilient... yes it sucks, but really, in the grand scheme of life on this planet, it will go on and people will find a way to work around it and etc... hardly the worst thing that could happen
Well yes, of course. But for several decades. Prince William Sound is still recovering from the Exxon Valdez, 20 years later.
ya, of course, but fact remains that the families that are being hurt by this WILL find a way to survive... the fish/wildlife WILL find a way to survive... as I said, this is hardly the worst thing that could happen... this world, again, is wildly resilient, all the creatures/plantlife WILL find a way to be fine... I'm honestly more concerned about the families of our dead soldiers and frankly, among all the things I can think of to be concerned about in the current climate (political, environmental, financial, etc.) this oil spill is not even on my radar...
The fact that you are in Illinois might have a little something to do with this, which I understand. But I don't understand why a failed bomb attempt in Times Square is receiving 10x the national coverage than an actual disaster.
actually, in a way, I kind of do... i kinda see it as a 'test run' in preparation for who knows what next... a dirty nuke?? any idea how many people that will kill and what it will do to our economy and defense spending?? viewed as an isolated incident, I understand what you are saying, but in context of, say, 9/11 versus the 1993 attempted bombing of the world trade center, OK City, a crazed gunman on a military base shouting "Allah Ackbar" while killing our soldiers, and countless other examples, ya, I totally see why this gets more press...
Ok so all the gas companys went up in my area 30 cents a gallon, guess there all going to help out..... oh i mean we are all going to help Exxon should send over some of there boys to help clean up..... 12 days and counting, went from no leaks to oh sh!^ and gas prices are going higher every day.... just in time for the summer holiday seasons.. hmmmmm. Did Goldman Sachs buy a oil rig? Im am sorry but the timing of this mess.
Yes, I'm not a complete idiot, I know oil floats on water. But, it is coming from the bottom of the ocean. I'm not a rocket scientist, but to me the density of salt water and oil, there is some type of chemical bonding/reaction at some point. You can't say there isn't a single trace of oil under the 1000 feet of water....come on. Now the families that lost husbands/wives, truly a tragedy. It's sad, I couldn't imagine being in their position. The jobs that are lost I understand that, I truly do. But, my family comes first and there position in no different than a family losing there job here 700 miles away from the coast. A loss of job is a loss of job no matter how you look at it. I think we can survive without shrimp cocktails and the finest of lobster. Now for marine life, that's different. As for our idiots in the coffee shop, this is what the world is unfortunately coming too. We can keep arguing about this over and over, but at the end it's unfortunate for everyone and my opinion, wildlife.
Detroit has been on an economic disaster for three years now, Hooker nobody cares until it becomes their problem. Is there a relief/clean up fund we can send money too? I will throw some cash your way.
Germ your right. When tragedies become an inconvenience to daily living that's when it becomes a problem. It's hard accept, a large majority of the new generation of people are beyond spoiled and has lost moral respect.
I didn't read the article but who Is the oil company here that had the spill? Terrible deal here for the wildlife.
Oil Mess It's getting a lot of coverage her lately on the news. BP (British Patrol) is the blame, due to a faulty fail-safe, don't make sense. But, turn on the tube and check it out on FOX News. Too much to relay. Some 75,000+ gallons of oil is in the Gulf.
