Not far at all actually! I live in Zebulon, but my fiancee lives in Apex, so I'm there every weekend just about. I'm so pumped for Sept 13, I already have had big buck dreams since March! I've got the trail cams out and rolling, waiting for the bachelor group to make the wrong move. Do you hunt private land in NC?
Here's some of the bucks so far on the hit list. They were taken in early June and are estimated to grow to mid 120s-130 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I killed the "super eight" last year, he ran around with the "super six" which I passed at 35 yards, didn't have a good enough shot...almost fell out of the stand from nerves. Here he is...hoping he's still around He's my number 1 hit lister because of his character. Just an all around stud of a 6 point for around here...can't wait!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ty-- don't you know they always squat at the shot. His leg will be clear when the sharp end of the dart gets there!
bahaha yeah...or I'll just blast through that shoulder with my heavy arrow tipped with a single beveled head...
Looks good to me Bone Head Hunter. I just updated the initial All Racked Up list and PM'd the guys who haven't shown up. Alternates won't be needed for another two weeks I think.
Does any one film there hunts. This is will be my first year running a camera arm while in stand. I want to get a shot on film, but it will not keep me from pulling the trigger on a nice buck if the film is not rolling. Hunting comes first.
I always carried a video camera with me to film bucks I didn't want to shoot, but I never did film my hunts. I'll continue to bring my camera out so if it comes together and happens to work out and I catch it on film, sweet! If not, it wont be something i'm trying to do.
I just hunt over what ever the farmer has planted. I lease 40 acres, 20 of it timber and 20 crops. He plants either corn or beans, so there is always stuff there early season, and then some spillage after harvest.
Also, did a little shooting last night...I ended with walking to an unknown yardage and going through my routing of shooting a deer...here's how it turned out Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Is Iowa all it's cracked up to be? Or is it hit or miss with big bucks depending on the areas/location, like a lot of other states?
It depends, it is a good habitat all around to grow big deer, but there are a lot of people that don't practice good deer management. I'd say it is no different then all the other big buck states. This is only my 4th season hunting in Iowa, first year was all public land, and was also my first year Bowhunting so I took the first deer I seen being a small 7 point. Then the next year I got permission on some private ground, missed a couple chances and smaller 130 inchers, and ended up taking a buck that had some injuries. Last year was the first year on my lease, had some great bucks on camera but come season they all disappeared. Passed a 130-140 inch buck opening day, and only seen one more decent buck on hoof the rest of the season. Id say on average, most bucks I see on my lease are 120s-140s at around 3-4 yrs old. I really don't think I have anything that has fully matured on my lease. Being my 2nd yr having it it is really hard to say.
This will be my first year filming my deer hunts. I filmed turkey this spring and all of my groundhog kills this summer for some practice. I have been doing my food plot as well. Here is a link to the thread on it...http://forums.bowhunting.com/food-plots-habitat-improvement/62041-fall-food-plot-2014-western-pa.html
Ah yes, I followed your thread, watching to see how PastorAndrew's mix did. I really like the results on how fast its growing and amount of clover in it. Looks like it's going to be a great late winter spot too!
