Walked outside to go to work at 4 this morning. Cool air hit my face and I instantly got pumped for deer season. It also helps that my back is finally feeling better. I would say I'm about 80-90% healed. So come October I should be good to go. Went out and did some adjustments to the bow today. Turned the poundage back up from turkey season. Did a modified French tune and had to make a small adjustment to my sight and rest. Got it hitting dead nuts out to 40 yds. My groups were about 3-4 inches at 40 yds, which considering I have not shot since May I'll take it. My groups at 20 and 30 were great, had arrows touching at 20yds, and around 1in at 30yds. I'll shoot every day or so from now till season opens. I'll also check broad head flight sometime, but have never had a problem getting bh to hit with fp.
Good to hear your back is doing good and are shooting good boss man! I've got my 40 dialed on as well, thinking of setting up a 50 and 60 just for targets. This Monday is going to be 77 as a high in NC!! Needless to say this fall weather has me pumped up for opening day next Saturday! Looks like the forecast for next Saturday says about the same, high 70s. Hopefully some big boys will be on their feet Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I spent the weekend teaching classes, but today I'm putting on the broadheads and getting ready for Saturday morning. I need to do all the laundry. Get my pack ready etc. God I just can't wait. Only negative so far is the wind isn't looking so good for me but we shall see.
I have to wash my clothes this week too. I've got some near winter gear coming in the mail this week. I bought the UA ColdGear Infrared Ridge Reaper pants, since they were the only ones long enough for me and i'm looking to buy the ColdGear Infrared Speed Freek Jacket this week if I can find it for the price I want. Can't wait for those late October, early November mornings!
Also got Miss Lori some extra arrows, she only had two left! I'll get them cut this week and hopefully get her some broadheads in the mail soon so she'll be ready to hunt, late September early October when the temperature comes down a little.
Trying too, I feel unprepared tho! I have so many things I wanna do before season haha oh well...here it comes! I did find some White Oaks already dropping so I'm going to set up Lori and my set so we can watch that tree from a distance.
The size of all our red and white oaks acorns are huge this year. Could be good and bad.. Plenty of food everywhere.. Hard to zero in on oaks to hunt though.
We have only found a few oaks that are loaded. Tho might work for us because it will concentrate the deer to these few oaks. What are your guys opinions on treestand a in/by oaks? Do you hang your stands in oaks with acorns or do you setup so you can see deer under the tree?
Very true, I've been thinking a lot about that and kinda made up my mind on places that I know are known sanctuaries that the does bed at. What i'll do is focus on the oaks around the sanctuaries in the mornings, hoping they'll stop by for a quick snack before bed and maybe catch a buck trailing. Afternoon hunts i'm not quite sure of my strategy. I've been thinking of being a little aggressive with my stand placement if the wind is favorable.
I often wondered the same thing. So I don't have a definite answer, but for the start, i'll watch the oak tree from a distance. If I think I can be a little more aggressive and sit in the oak tree without alerting the deer than that will also be an option but after I first view it from a distance (because you know the big boys will be doing the same)
Aaron--- This is my opinion on setting up on oaks they are feeding on.. I always setup a stand that is crosswind or a quartering wind to the tree/trees I am hunting. I just make sure the set has good back cover at the height I normally hunt and is within 40 yards of the feeding zone... I have found that those big boys will nine times out of ten come to the oaks from down wind.. Its hard to setup and be close enough for a shot if your hunting down wind from them, also you get busted more times than not and don't even realize it most of the time. I take my chances on a cross wind stand every time I can on Oaks...
Just finished swapping practice blades for real blades on my NAP Killzones... Good God that was not easy, such a small bolt and nut. But now that I'm done I can't help but see my Montec G5's... I have never used mechanicals before and now I'm thinking should I go back them?
John -I shot Montec's for several years. Great broad head. Give your kill zones a chance.. They are a quality mechanical...
This will be my first year using mechanical heads. Last year I used the NAP hellrazor, this year I tried something a little different and got the Rage hypodermics. We'll see how the deer do when I put an arrow through the boiler maker!!
I just switched to the Ramcats from a Rage 2 blade. From what I have shot so far the Ramcats are just as accurate and look like they can be just as devastating.
I was shooting T3's last couple of years and move to Grim Reapers this year. Looking forward to seeing the hole these 1.75 heads leave.
I have used killzones for the past 2 seasons and have had great results. But any broadhead will get the job done if you hit then in the right spot.
I honestly just hope to be able to draw on a deer this year at the minimum. Last year was my first year hunting deer with a bow and I passed opening day on a small deer at 34 yards because I didn't like the shot. Was quartering away. I let my buddy take the shot and he hit it but too high.
