We don't have hogs here either, in central Indiana at least. A friend at work has family that farm a lot of ground in southwest Indiana and they have a very small number (for now).

Also, down the road from work someone hit a bobcat. Those are extremely rare around here. Most debate that they even exist here but most people who spend a lot of time in the woods has seen them.

We have always had quite a few bobcats around here...once while I was bow hunting from the ground when I was 14...I had a bobcat walk up the ditch below me and turn broadside so I shot him and after squalling and jumping in the air it turned and came right at me. It was hit hard so it was just crawling by the time it got to me and I popped it over the head with my bow. Lol, it was an exciting 30 seconds.

I was looking at fur prices the other day and apparently bobcats hides are bringing $200-$300...or were last Feb.

just through out about 400lbs of cull apples on two spots I have. Food plot is growing good, brassicas are nice and leafy which is perfect timing as were about 30 days or so away from first frost up here. Maybe even sooner. And the sunflowers are nice and tall giving a nice privacy barrier for the deer. Ever since I started planting sunflowers around the edge of the plot I have a lot more day time pics.

I never have had any success with scent attractants. Also, here it's not legal to bait so that's out of the question also.
I try to use cover scents as much as possible. I like using vanilla on my boots. That typically fools them and it's really cheap.

I never understood why baiting is not allowed. I seriously don't think it's any more effective then a food plot or farmers fields. As a matter of fact most bug bucks won't come to a pile of corn around here as they know its man made. Yes guys kill big bucks over bait, but IMO no more then any other hunting ground.

The only argument to me that's fair is bait piles can spread disease. Although doe and buck groups sniff and lick each others asses like dogs lol they share small puddles of water etc. like we can't save the world. Disease will spread in deer as it does in humans. Just my two cents.

I suspect that the logic behind no baiting laws is that baiting is not sporting.

I certainly agree with the logic, and I have never hunted over artificial bait until last year when I was invited to a friends place. I sat probably 24 total hours in his stands over the season over feeders and only saw 7 deer total come to the feeders in daylight. Of course he had LOTS of night pix of bucks at them.

I wrongly assumed I would be guaranteed a buck kill... Obviously I was wrong. They certainly don't hang out by the feeders waiting for a corn release...

Are there states that forbid baiting of one species but allow it for others? I'm thinking bear vs deer? Doesn't Wisconsin forbid baiting deer but allow it for bears?

Come to think of it, OK is such a state. We do not allow the baiting of birds - turkey, quail, etc - but allow it for deer...

Are birds more susceptible to baiting thus making it less sporting? Or is it more that the local populations might not be able to sustain themselves if a whole flock of turkeys or covey of quail were wiped out over a bait pile by a gang of hunters with scatter guns?

Funny story! My nephew got all excited about putting out apples. Every year he puts them out. Last year he told me he put a bag of apples by his stand and the next day they were all gone. I thought why not fill my pockets with apples and put them by my stand, can't hurt. So I did. I stepped on some to kinda spread the scent around. Then I watched one squirrel take every apple I put out even the crushed ones and bury them. LOL

A couple years ago I messed with a scent drag. I didn't like the results. First I tried putting the scent drag down when I was about 75 yards from my stand then dragged it to my stand. This buck came in and hit the trail and followed it away from me. I got him to stop a few times by grunting but he wouldn't leave that trail. I think he could tell which way the scent got stronger.

In a different stand I dropped the drag starting at the stand and walked away, then put the drag away and returned to my stand. I saw a couple of doe hit the trail and they turned and left. Then a buck did the same thing. So I'm not sure. I'm so confused! LOL

What about using a decoy? My cousin has one (new in the box), that he'll never use.
Anyways, one of the woods opens into fields. You should be able to see it for quite a ways. I was watching a midwest whitetails where he was using one with very good success.

Those are solid deer Jared. It's getting close here in NE. Opening day for bow is the 15th. Got a fishing trip planned with my boys and dad during that time but when I get back I'm all in!
