Spotted my first shooter of the season today. Maybe 105-110 inch 3.5 year old ( I think). He came in 10 minutes after first light. He was 35-40 yards out and was angling in like he was going to give me a shot, but turned and went up the hill. I then saw a 6 point 45 minutes later taking the same exact route. I repositioned my stand for tomorrow morning to give me a 15-20 yard. I also shot a doe at 12 yards today and she fell over dead just 30 yards later.
I was on stand by 5:45am this morning. The winds were crazy at 20mph all day. I hunted all day. I did not see one single deer. I am back at it tomorrow guys. I am wiped out but I have enough fuel to last at least another 5-6 hours in the morning after two all day hunts in a row.
yeah it wears a guy out sitting all day like that! I sat this morning and tonite and seen a lot of deer, all just small and too far away but I am anxiously awaiting corn to get tooken off!
I don't like making predictions because I just hunt hard and whatever happens, happens...but I am going to have a buck on the ground by 11am tomorrow morning...I CAN feel it.
I made it back from school early enough today to get a hunt in. I saw 4 deer, including two fawns, a small 7-pointer, and a doe. I'm not overly optimistic with my chances tomorrow unless the wind dies down, but I'll still be out there with the hopes that a shooter buck makes the vital mistake of stepping into my shooting lane :D
C'mon Brett! You've gotta think optimistically! I hope the neighbors allow you to go over and search. Usually a gut shot deer will die, it just takes time. Best of luck with the recovery process and I hope for your sake the neighbor cooperates. All you can do is keep your head up and hope for the best. Give me a text tomorrow and let me know what you get figured out. Things have been pretty slow around here with the higher temps so any entertainment is welcome :D!
Well things finally shaped up a bit by me. After a pretty boring weekend, last night was exciting. I had a couple smaller bucks feeding in the field and one behind me on a differnt field. I heard him grunt at a couple does then heard another grunt. turned to see a BEAST. about 100 yards away. I grunted at him and he got to about 75 yards but didnt see my decoy on the other side of the trees so he scooted the does he was with the other way
Man I hate only being able to hunt the weekends! I've heard activity had picked up a bit around home, and of course it's right after I leave from being home for the weekend. Hopefully this upcoming weekend is quite a bit cooler temp wise and the deer will be moving.
Haven't saw him since I PMed you the other day. I also haven't hunted since Friday either, been working. Wednesday will be my next time out, I'm ready!!
Good luck tomorrow, Steve. And everyone else for that matter. I'm planning on an AM hunt myself, across the line in PA. If the wife is feeling better in the AM that is..
Schultzy--good luck tomorrow. Temps are lowering, the bucks are moving...KILL! To all you other guys, it is looking to be a great Thurs/Fri/Sat for some rut hunting....get it done!
Well... what's goin on fellas? We've been quite for a couple days! I'm itching to get off of work soon so I can head home. I'm so anxious to get out and hunt tomorrow! I might even see if I can get off of work a little early and make it home in time for an evening sit. One of our neighbors that lives across from one of our properties saw a huge buck with a doe out in the middle of our pasture in daylight, and my dad believes he saw the same buck with its doe when he got home from work around 10 at night right in front of our house! My dad said he thought the buck was at least 160" from what he could see with his headlights. I really hope i can get something done though, because next weekend starts shotgun season, and my chances at killing a trophy buck with my bow will drop drastically due to the pickup of hunting pressure. Wish me luck! I love this time of year!!!
