9 1/2" beard 1 5/8" spur 1 1/4" spur No weight yet...having coffee. It was a very brisk cold wind and 47 out there.
24 1/2#'s I used my natural voice call to bring in hens. I thought from last gobble they'd taken the toms over the ridge. Then out of no were a hen popped up infront of me. She was on a mission to hit the alfala field behind me. I caught a commotion a 100 yrds out and 5 Toms were fighting their way towards me. The hen walked 18" past my window I held my 20 ga steady waiting as the Toms approached. 50 yrds out I hear, growl growl growl! WTH! Thought we had a bobcat, but a raccoon was not happy with the toms. They dissappeared. I realized they may be circling behind me and lean my chair back. Sure enough there runs a jake for the field. I pull gun around and get it out the back window when I see the long beard running. 35-40 yrds out. Eewww 3" mags, I led the bird and the second it's head hit my bead sight I pulled the trigger. He flopped hard and didn't do too much after that. A jake and another tom cam back to whoop his behind but I opened the door to get him. My calling worked great as usual, but after the raccoon, it was all luck. I'm a good shot but it was a stretch on a moving head tucked bird.
Two of my spots are a real pain to get to with my kayak. One involves dragging one a mile and the other you have to paddle a mile and when you do, you are taking your chances when launching bc of the deep mud banks. Came up with a solution for one with a foldable or a lightweight inflatable kayak. Put it on my mountain bike, ride 1 mile, then deploy whatever one I choose. And if Im hunting hard I can just store it in the woods for use the next day instead of packing it back in. The other spot I actually need a decent kayak that has a bit of weight to it, so I will be a foldable kayak bc after walking in a mile I need to be able to paddle up to 1.5 miles. So I think I just talked myself into something like this! haha. Only 17 lbs and I can fold it up and put it on the back of my mountain bike. Save my aging legs some energy.
No go this a.m. we have rain for next 5 days and this morning is the only dry time. Having last cup of coffee and headed out. I did watch the lone hen walk the trail plot behind the house at 6:35. She was headed to across the street plots. No toms in tow. Then just now I watched 3 out of 4 remaining Toms come up out of where I took their buddy. They fed in alfalfa and continued up the hill to the next alfalfa field and swampy area. Now I never heard another close shot yesterday so either the 4th Tom is with a hen somewhere or a bow hunter got him. With only 3 left I may have to brave a bit of rain and try my hand out at the ridge blind. I had wanted to take another bow bird this year. Last years bird was a blast. The ridge blind is setup for gun only unless I'm sitting on the deck. O.k. for deer but the turkey literally roost over the blind. I need a very dark night just to get in clean, I cleared the trail a few days ago. I then opened all the windows to avoid additional movements. That blind has swing up and out windows. It's windy a the window acts as awind, sun, rain visor.
So much for going out this a.m., a damp, cold, foggy morning. I set alarm for 4 a.m. , it never went off so I thought. I never took my phone off mute after opening day...lol. I may do a later sit else where on property just to check movements.
My brain is starting to get into mini hyper drive about these properties. haha. Just like I don't like showing people where I am going, I don't like advertising that I am using a kayak in an area. Gives people ideas. Folded up on the back of my bike doesn't show my hand. Public land discretion. Haha.
I finally found a way in to 200 acres of islands that are a real pain. I have been using County GIS mapping. It is crazy how much info you thought you knew, but it turns out lands you thought were private bc that is what they want you to believe, are actually public. Time to print out some GIS ownership maps that the government themselves updated and have online. I can now access those public lands to island jump to islands I have wanted to hunt for years.
You should put it in a body bag and drag it thru thou the woods. Then nobody will mess with you! Haha Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Wait a minute. Didn't you used to work in the medical field? Those in/from the industry seems to often have a LOT of dark humor.
I did and I could tell you stories that would curl, or uncurl your hair. But crazy is still crazy! But I wouldn't mind spending some time with these crazies!! Sent from my SM-N975U1 using Tapatalk
