Probably. Reports from my buddies there say they aren’t seeing anything right now and I don’t like the idea of leaving deer to find deer. I’m sure I’ll get there eventually.
Went to my little honey hole this morning. I was going to walk through the bedding to try to kick something up. I noticed some fresh decent size tracks in the snow, so I just walked around the area and stayed out of the bedding. I did kick up one good size doe. Deer are out already here. A few in the fields feeding and I almost hit one at 1130. I’m beat but it’s the last day of firearms season so I think I’ll go and see if this guy is still alive and they are his tracks. The neighborhood boys have been in there a few weeks ago and shot a doe next to my stand. You can see the deer laying there. Here’s a picture of the buck I think is still in there.
My opinion is that I wouldn’t trust a camera to tell me the whole truth. Patterns can change when crops move out but It wouldn’t sell me on whether that spot is bad or not. The camera only sees one line of sight. I would trust my instincts over the camera and at least hunt it before bailing out. As for the wind, one day it gets you and the next it doesn’t. Example meaning, that have you ever had a deer walk dead down wind of you and you know they’re about to pick you off but they show no sign of scenting you. Sometimes it doesn’t make sense and I don’t feel like thermals is the answer to everything like it has become. Cameras are nice but give a lot of people false hope. It’s nice to just go out and be surprised at what nature throws at you over what the cameras a telling you. A lot less agitating….haha!
I seen about 5 does about 150yds in 1 direction and a 4p out in the field for about 30min at 150yds in the other direction. I’ve decided I’m going to go and find a tree to sit under that will allow me to see the other side of a field. Not expecting a shot but hopefully I can observe a large area for intel.
Well as ash said it's the last day of regular gun season. Tomorrow starts regular muzzle loader and start of first late bow.. I have the crossbow, but I also have my 50cal. Traditions muzzle loader. Hubby has an Italian made beautiful flintlock I bought him. I think he could even use my crossbow. The buck pics has him looking to sit the garden blind. I have several other places to hunt. Son called, he may take the blind and I could hunt one of the others ones. I told him he needs to call me and be in blind by 3:30. So I wait. He's coming up so my plans change...try the mid hill blind Good luck guys
I agree on both counts. I had a buck, and yes it was only a 5pt, which I mentioned earlier in the season, out in front of me at 20yrds. Wind was perfect for where I was. He stood there for a full 5 mins sniffing the air, for what I assume was hot doe scent. When he moved, he was walking straight towards me, then he angled to my left and continued to travel behind me. I was certain he was going to catch my scent, now being 15 FEET behind me, but he didn't! He just continued on his way into thicker brush. Go figure.
Nice 100lb Muzzy Doe down. Can stìll take another Doe with archery. Gonna help my boy get a Muzzy Doe the next three days, then I may try the crossbow next weekend.
The peak of the rut there is usually after Thanksgiving, but I’ve seen rut activity there through the end of January.
I'm settled in ,sons settled in his spot very steel grey skies getting warmer. Crossed some huge tracks on the way in. Dogs to my West (gully) barking...hopeful sign
So the hill blew up and literally in a 10 min. span, 22 shots in all directions. One very close rifle crack that made me text son and ask what he got. He saw nothing until.....the drive home and the 12 bolted out in front of him on the road east of sanctuary. That boy has 9 lives they've shot at him at least 2Xs I know of. Now to see what cams see tonight. I'm done until after the cancer assessment and the warm up blows over.
