I hear a deer coming in from behind me, turn around and see a real nice 8pt, prob 120ish coming in to the water tank, I start to draw and the SOB picks me off- we have a several minute Mexican stand off with me at half draw. Finally he puts his head down and starts walking back to my right, which means I now have to dip around my tree and redraw. I dip around my tree no problem and he's quartering away perfect at 25 and I start to draw and he whips his head around and pegs me again. So now I'm basically at 3/4 draw and he's staring dead at me. Then he turns his head forward and starts trotting and I come to full draw but now he's behind some trash and I can't take the shot. He gets to about 40 and stops again and then lowers his head and grunts and I see that there's a doe ahead of him. He chases her behind some pines and they f*** around for a little bit and then the doe pops out headed straight towards me and there's a buck behind her so as soon as he gets clear of the little pines at 25 I let the arrow fly and see it hit him right behind the shoulder, he bounds away into the brush and the doe just stands there and then all of a sudden that first buck that I saw pops out of the pines and chases her around for a little while. Now I'm thinking 'what the F did I just shoot?'
It gets to dark and then I get down out of the tree go find my arrow pick up the blood, and he's dead within 50 yards.

Damned if I didn't shoot a fricking forkie.

Wish I had been drunk. Better excuse.
Never been more pissed for killing a deer in my life. I pass 100-125 up here every season. Only reason I was going to shoot the first guy I saw is it's the 2nd to last evening I'm going to hunt in WI and he was a perfect high 8pt just beyond the ears meeting qdma criteria.

That said, after the season I've had, making a perfect shot and getting a quick clean kill does take the edge off.
