Driving to Jersey.. be in a tree in the AM. Have to kill a Doe then I'll be Buck hunting. Several good prospects and a bunch of 2yr olds.
49 now and 39 for morning yotes be damned I'll be out and hour before day light. P.S added a bunch of late dinner points with dinner tonight...even picked pears and made him a pear crisp ... happy man happy wife...hunting
The day started with a near immediate response to a locator bugle. I figured he would be headed to cooler and higher attitudes, so I moved quickly up the Ridge. I knew this bull was likely just over the other side. This nearly the exact scenario as I had happen 3 years ago on this same ridge. I got a glimpse of the butt end of a decent 5x5 at 80 yds. I should've stayed silent, but I screwed it up with a cow chirp...and off the bull ran...barking. I kept pushing up the the ridge And onto the adjacent, but apart from nasty blowdown, nothing. My buddy wheeled into town and I dropped about 1000' and walked back to the car. We did an evening hunt...no elk, responses, nothing. But one of the other hunters in this area, I call the cowboys (from ND and have horses) got a stud probably 350 bull. It rained, long hike. Wet, sore, tired. A voice mail from a friend to connect with one of his buddies was a good exchange of info for both of us. He's seeing bull, but has a cow tag...I've seen about 23 cows in the prior 4 days...and 3 bulls 3x3, 4x4 and this mornings 5 x5...
0300 ROLL CALL!!!!! LETS GO!!!!!! As I said in my team thread, If I'm gonna die, I want it to happen while I'm doing something I enjoy! I'm stumbling into this season like a drunk sailor stumbling back to his ship (No offense to my Navy brethren). Fresh batteries in the headlamp, thermacell packed, bought my hunting license last night, LETS GOOOOOOO!!!!!
Up and getting ready. Gonna be great being in a tree. Its 50 out. I'm feeling like blood will spill this morning.
“Reveille, reveille. All hands heave out and trice up. The smoking lamp is lighted in all authorized spaces. Now reveille.” (Okay, you won’t get it unless you’re Navy). It’s opening day! I must be more excited than I thought because I woke up at 3:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep. It’s too early to get dressed so I’m sitting here drinking coffee and waiting. Good luck to everyone heading out today!
All setup!! 50 degrees, light N/NW wind. The woods smell amazing! Good luck those who are fortunate to be out. 1/2 hour till legal shooting light. Damn this feels good!
I’m here making breakfast/lunch heading to work!! Good Luck, killa!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
