Way to go Finny Nice job scouting and changing tactics to get on him. Sweet story. I hope to get out once this weekend for MI early doe season with my bow. 18 days until our archery season opens. FYI - thank you for the range finder input. I got a Garmin retractable lanyard to clip into my safty harness.
47° this morning here in Indiana...deer are up and moving. Cameras going off all morning. Couple bucks fighting again on video. Deer activity from 6:30am to current
Dude is that a carbon arrow? Mine always just break. Only time I had any bend was back in the day with aluminum arrows.
Little buddy ordered a genesis bow custom. He sat on the computer for about an hour changing colors back and forth. Came in the mail today so this was his after school homework. I’d rather watch him than shoot my stuff.
Well, today was a disappointing long bowhike in a new area. The initial '1/2 mile hike'not was longer in the dark, cross country and with some surprise terrain not well depicted in the topo. The next surprise, the stream crossing, am extra .7 mile as some beavers thought the stream would make a stunning set of beaver ponds. The next 'little steam' required a 1200' climb, till I could cross it...into the land of blowdown. Once I dropped 1000' things started feeling cooler, greener and elky...except the elk weren't there. I did find a great short cut back...albeit (successfully) jumping a steam with a backpack...even an extra 20# left me feeling my age. One delightful encounter, I found a whole covey of, or is it flock of pigrons...note to self, hold low with the grouse arrow as it's 50gr lighter than your elk arrows...you never know what you'll find on usfs land. The winds kicked up and it felt like one of those winter breezes...sure enough, snow in the high peaks and rain showers this afternoon...probably a bit more of each at the right elevations...
Not sure if I'm going to be hitting the woods for the opener tomorrow. We got 6 inches of rain yesterday, on top of the record-breaking rainfall we have received so far this summer. Tomorrow is supposed to be a bit on the windy side 1-15 mph, with gusts up to 25. Normally that would be full send. however, with the ground being swamp-like from all of the rain, I fear trees being blown over, which the news is even warning about for homeowners. Saturday we are supposed to be getting the effects from hurricane Lee with wind gusts up to 45 mph with significant power outages expected due to trees being blown over with the ground being absolutely saturated. I want to hunt bad, but I don't think I'm willing to take a chance tomorrow morning. I'm about 85% on not going....so there is a chance!
Opted with crossbow and in blind today. Planned on before light but the coyotes were really bad again about the time alarm went off. Got here right at light to look past blind and see flags 50 yrds away going back in to beans. They'd been headed straight for blind trail. A minute later came the snorts. So if I pray maybe they do a wide circle back...yah sure. Stinking coyotes. There's really not much I fear but a pack I do. Especially having a dog bite half my finger off and I didn't even realize it had happened until my son yelled .Mom your finger!!!!!that was just one dog. Anyways figured it would be clear due to them being in area late morning last time. Good thing this is early, a couple of weeks before regular season to settle back down.
For the life of me I couldn't get him to stop long enough for a good pic . Very young 6 or 8. Nice start on a rack. Deer a deer lol
