I didn’t see this post until after we had recovered him, but while we did take the dog with us, I had Bubba keep the dog on the road while I took one non-colorblind person with me to check the arrow and see what we were dealing with. I couldn’t check the arrow when I got down because I was sure he was still alive about 100 yards away and I’d have had to walk 30 yards in his direction to check it, so I sneaked out. As soon as we saw the arrow and good blood at the impact site we knew the buck was dead so I called bubba and told him to bring Rip in.
Another doe with 2 fawns. At least the deer are moving. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Nice cold crisp morning. , part of the orange army today. On the ground today. Rifle in hand but more of a scouting excursion for next year Congrats LC. Awesome buck
One funny thing about the recovery last night: Rip had been tracking for about 10 minutes when he really opened up. Bubba said “I think he’s on him!” and took off running. There were 7 of us out there: Myself, Bubba and his wife Sunny, Jonathan, Jacob and his son Mason and Adam. We all went running about a hundred yards and we stopped as Rip started running circles. Bubba said “I think he jumped him. I’m sure he jumped him” and my heart sank. How could I be so wrong about what I thought I saw? Everyone was shining lights and looking. Adam said excitedly “I see his eyes right there!” Everyone was looking and I pulled out the thermal imager and was scanning. Rip was running around like he was losing his mind. It was chaotic. All of a sudden Bubba said “Are you kidding me?” We all looked at him and he was pointing at my buck lying dead FIVE FEET from where he was standing. The buck was already stiff so he had been dead for a while. I was afraid I had hit liver but I didn’t. It was actually a double lung shot but pretty far back and a little higher than I remembered. I stayed up late last night celebrating. Everyone else had to crash because they were hunting this morning but I was excited. I’m tagged out on bucks in Arkansas now so I guess I’ll go on doe patrol for a couple of days.
I hit the back of the left lung up high and clipped the back of the right lung just below mid-body. Now I’m thinking he was dead when I climbed down but I wasn’t taking any chances.
He probably was dead. But you did the right thing and waited. Plus you would have missed all the fun with a full camp recovery. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
