It’s the same here in Missouri. Archery season closes during gun season. I can still bow hunt with a gun tag though.
I’m out, have a meeting at 11:30. Didn’t hunt that spot I saw the buck at last night I got to the property and westher said S wind and it was NNE. So I was hosed and went to another spot close by, saw two doe outa range.
To windy to work today (45mph). Tree limbs are falling, leaf tornadoes, buckets, garbage cans tipping over and my cell cam is blowing up. Lol. Deer move just fine in high winds.
So far today I've seen 2 fawn does, 2 spikes, a six point and a 7 point - The 7 was nose to the ground and moving with purpose
Taking a break, I’m exhausted and falling asleep. Left the climber at the tree, I’ll wrap up the trip over there. Good luck to those still out!
Slow day here. I'm about to leave work. I should be up in a tree with a shotgun & buck shot by 3.45. Good luck to the pm crew.
70 degrees so I scouted. Mainly wanted to see my island access. May not be this year but I'm going to do some damage in here...
Tried to post earlier but had crap for signal. Nothing more for me in the morning. Back in OH. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Man, overcast skies have rolled in, and it has cooled off quite a bit. I have the most perfect set up going on right now, I can’t even sit down. let’s go!!!!!
sat till 11am, didnt see a deer, just two 'yotes and plenty of squirrels (what a difference a day makes)... warmed up fast and very windy, was 65deg. already when I left the place ... thats it, Vac. #2 was fun, seen some nice bucks, came close, very close to a few big guys .. rain coming tonight and fri, gun opens Sat. and the place, well it turns to crap with all the gun hunters. We can still bowhunt using archery tags during gun, just have to wear Blaze Orn. ... luckily NO ANTLERLESS tags can be used on the F&W areas ... I havnt gun hunted since 2013 when I killed a 160" .... I'll hibernate till gun is over and try in late season .... good luck to all ..
Saw a couple unidentified running in the thickness. In a different direction, heard 5 grunts...never saw.
Like hunting in a Bob Ross painting. Lots of chasing in the rhododendrons today. Nothing to shoot at though. Last day with the bow tomorrow then I'll start taking long walks with my open sited BAR. First rifle season here that I'll really get to experience completely. No huge construction projects at the moment.
So close! Not 15 minutes after typing this, I had a shooter 8 pt eating acorns and heading my way. He was at about 40, too thick to shoot. I thought I’m definitely getting a shot. Suddenly a couple of does came out in the crp field, he caught a whiff of them and trotted out there. Then another big doe came in, eating those same acorns. Suddenly she does the sexy trot towards the field and another buck quickly appears and follows her. He must have been there the whole time, couldn’t see him. This trip is a wrap, had a blast. Hopefully I’ll get a couple more long weekends in. Good luck all!
Maybe wrong thread to post this on but it gets the most traffic so... We had a front come through this morning. Super strong winds. Sustained 30 gusting to 45ish. High wind warnings on the radio. Woods looked alive with movement for about 5 hours toDay with leaves/ branches blowing down. 7 different bucks were seen from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All from my windows at my cabin. And I wasn't even looking hard as I committed today to stay inside and do a good cleaning ( greatly needed) My point is, I've read for many years here, other sites, magazine articles, ect to stay home on high wind days. After 40+ years of bowhunting, I just shake my head. Granted, I very seldom hunt a field edge, (prefer thicker cover always) but I've had SO MANY phenomenal hunts in winds that make even the big trees sway. Another plus is how much more movement/ sounds you can get by with. Almost like cheating. I will take a windy over calm day ANYDAY unless it's cold and that's only because it makes it just miserable to endure. 1st year I bought my ground, I built a 6x6 enclosed blind that's 12' to the floor. My buddy had a tag so I invited him. Last day of gun season, winds we 55 gusts. We climbed in early morn. Stand was rocking hard even though it was in real thick cover. Both of us said, " no way are deer gonna move in this" it was almost dangerous getting to the stand. He shot a 155" deer at daybreak. That buck came by with no signs of fear at all. I guess what I'm getting at is, if you have time and a spot that has a really thick travel corridor, don't sleep in thinking deer ain't gonna move. They do!. Heck, even better yet, it can help because it may restrict their movements towards open areas/ field edges where most bowhuners tend to hunt. VS and others that use a canoe/ boat, please disregard Don't NOT go because of high winds. Get in thick cover.
A lot of modern studies have shown the higher the wind, the higher the deer movement. Makes sense to me that a deer would want to be on the move in high winds instead of a sitting duck with hardly any ability to smell correctly or hear a predator coming in on them as they are bedded.
