Oh did I mention, I'm afraid of heights. I'm literally a nut case driving our vehicles, way way worse when riding down our hill . The car is in first gear the second I leave the drive way...
Wind forecast has been good up to now, totally switched and going the wrong way. I am so getting busted over here tonight. This ought to be good.
sat this AM till 1030, it was cold too, 24 deg. .... going back to the same spot in the AM Wed. winds will be SW, still good for this spot ... its same location I killed a nice 8pt last season (120ish) ... about 9am to my back right stood a larger 8pt (130ish), working a branch 60 yds downwind of me (se wind/he was NE from me ... never showed any sign of being spooked... he circled on my right, passed by at 38yds and continued to go S/SE. ... he stayed in the thick stuff so never a possible shot .. He crossed the trail I killed last years buck on, I thought he was going to turn left and that would bring him to the same 'spot' where I shot last years critter.... nope, he crossed the trail and kept going ... "Such is life" ...
Just 2 tonight… coulda killed a big doe but my team wouldn’t let me Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Well 5:05 I look over toward neighbor pines and here comes a dark colored deer. I think I see some white but not much. he crosses my other two streams and is now walking up hill toward Gator. I grab for my grunt call but alas it's home so I mouth grunted. He stopped looking then turned again. I mouth called again and added a snort wheeze. He turned and walks across our property to hunt camp on other side of me. Stayed 70 yards out but would stop and look for me. Other than him I watched pileated, bunch of very grey squirrels, chippers and Goshawk. Tomorrow is my last chance to hunt until Saturday gun opener. I will then have late bow and the Christmas hunt to try again
Nothing for the afternoon. Pretty rough out here. I grabbed my bow about 7 times today. 1 was a deer, the rest, squirrels
Ended the night with several doe moving in. Had a decent buck on her trail but he would not come to me with grunting and snort wheezing at him. They were only about 60-70 yards away. This followed by a broken rack buck who looked defeated. Grunted at him and he decided he got his butt kicked enough and headed the other way. Very eventful lately
Something keeps telling me to get up and hunt before work tomorrow. Should be about 35 degrees in the morning. 1230pm start. Hunt. Nap. Work. We shall see.
Wow!, I sure do do appreciate all the positive posts from a deer a FRIEND shot. I'll try to answer some of your questions. Tdk, it did not freeze here last night. No frost. OND, now that's more like it (pics). Arrowflinger, yes, that me. My buddy is a real private guy and I will not show his face. Shocker, the color of his rack is a bit unusual for here. Usually much lighter. Suncrest, about 100 yards. So a recap. Went to last blood this morning. We searched for an hour in a small area but could not find one speck of blood. Trail was leading towards a thick bedding area I respect and never enter unless shed hunting in the spring or trailing a deer. its a sacred place. I did now want to go in there as there was no blood to follow but I Had To. Even for a little ways. Got in about 30 yards, found a speck of blood about the size of a pea. It was on a main trail. Happened to look ahead and seen a pile of white hair stuck to the side of a fallen ash tree. Thought that looked odd so I went to investigate. Got to it and there he was laying right on the back side dead. I was not sure where my buddy was as I lost track of him. Finally found him back where we started. He looked TOTALLY dejected. I did not let on I found his buck. I asked him what he wanted to do. He said " I don't know" he asked me" what I'd do.". I stuck my hand out to shake his hand and said, " I think we should go drag out a nice buck" He gave a look of bewilderment. I said, " congrats Buddy, he's a nice buck". Follow me. "Know way, really"? The look he had when he peaked over that tree was priceless. No words were said for a bit. I know him well and hes a very humble man and he would like a few minutes to just admire/ reflect. Time with a great friend I will always cherish. Unfortunately, the coyotes found it and ate the hinds and ripped the stomach open. Made a mess! Went and got a saw, cut it in half, kept the cape, head. Having very little meat to salvage hurt him deeply. I'll show a few pics of where I found the last spot of blood to where he died. This is what bucks love to have for bedding cover. Rubs/ scrapes. It literally stunk with deer scent! Again, sacred ground. I will show one pic of him. He needed time to give thanks for the Lord for His Blessings and I did not interrupt. One pic will be of a buck that showed up today mid day not 50 yards from where he sat last night. That's it for the year here. Gotta leave some seed for next year to chase Sure do appreciate you all for following along on a stranger's hunt. I may even read to him all the kudos / encouraging responses you've given. Thanks again ALL.
Great story. I'm glad you were able to recover him for your good friend. Sent from my SM-N975U1 using Tapatalk
