I'm back home, 15 minutes after sunset one of the big ones showed up. I had no clue he was there until I turned to look and he must have seen me. Got his attention with a few grunts, using a gtunt tube that has the snortwheeze tube. Totally botched that and he trotted straight into the woodline.

Such an awkward stand placement. Single ladder stand on the back side of a tree. Tree leans weird so I get why it was that way, but even a ground blind would have been better. You would basically have to climb up and stand facing the tree the entire sit. Would have been a long 4 1/2 hours doing that.

Here's where I was sitting. I am facing SE, unless you want to stand up amd tuen around on a small ladder stand platform. Wind was NW and stayed pretty steady the entire sit.

Deer come from the treeline all the way around but tonight they came out slightly west of me due north. There is a small dirt road 8yds north of the stand that connects the big field woth the long narrow one to the east. Deer normally filter out into the field and then ake their way to the east field. Think the buck I almost shot was harassing the doe and 2 fawns so they went past the road and that's where it went awry.

North view(behind me) and connecting road

And the view to the west, both the lead doe and buck I was going to shoot stopped at 15yds inbthe lower left corner. But right handed it was my weak side and bothing I could have done. Inside the woods was negated by the wind and no real shooting lanes.

Pretty wild. He shot him from the ground, standing in a freshly cut cornfield. When he called me, he wasn't even excited. I didn't even know he shot a STUD until we walked up on him. Heaviest deer I've ever drug out of the woods. Stunk like heck too. He was ruttin hard.

Here's the big one that came out with 15 minutes legal time left. Couldn't make out anything but the basic height and width of his rack. The one I was going to shoot was probably 125'ish, long spindly G2's amd 3's.

Saw the lone deer which ended up being a lone doe. Decent size body for the short snout. Small buck came and pushed her off. Too far and too thick to tell what but smaller buck. Nothing else. Hoping to get out again next Saturday

I'll be going back to hunt this place Thursday and Friday for certain, possibly Saturday and Sunday as well. A 3rd guy will be out there Thursday and Friday as well.

He doesn't hunt inside the woods, so it's field edges only for the most part. Could make for some boring all day sits, totally different from what I'm accustomed to.

Get a saddle, latch on and use the stand as a platform facing the tree. Trust me, it's one of my favorite ways to hunt now. Switch up styles and direction, sitting and standing, depending on wind and comfort

As for me, between me and my buddy we could see over half his 40 acres in WI and we neither saw nor heard nary a deer all afternoon/ evening.

As to my cousin, he sat in my stand today on public in MI and smoked this beauty this afternoon. Screenshot_20231104_221216_Messages.jpg

I'm not even mad, this dude is a straight up deer assassin and you couldn't ask for a better deer hunting buddy. So happy for him. Only wish I could've been there to help him drag out.

This is the worst. Soooo...spotted the doe first and noticed she was soaking wet and looking back. Buck shows and she starts running my way. I already had bow in hand and went to hook my release, but it wasn't set and just clicked. She's at 10 yards, hears it and veers right in a hurry. That's what I needed anyway. Lead him away from a dead on approach. He gets to 10 and starts to turn as I drew. Now, steep angle at 10 yards, quartering to. I put the pin slightly above mid body, tight to shoulder and let it go. I did get a pass through, but I'm now wondering if I hit too high. Blood got real light at 300 yards into the track before losing it. I'm just sick. I think guts may be plugging the off side. No guts or smell of gits on the arrow, which was covered in bright blood from tip to nock.

He may be dead 50 yds from where you last saw blood. I have high hopes for you in the morning. You are going to find him.
