I’m back at the camper. I had that big boy pegged, but it was almost last light and I couldn’t see the small limbs between us. I saw the Nocturnal kick down and then watched it sail right over his back as he was working a scrape. I wanted to cry, cuss, scream or something but there were two does feeding 60 yards south and they fed right through all of this. I’ll go back in the morning but I’m not sure what to expect.
Looking up recipes for a nice 6 permit soup. I miss the days of $500 beater cars, need a 90's ford escort'esque type car that gets good fuel mileage for scouting. Might as well buy new. Anticipating another up in the air season next year, new position at work pretty much limits me to 2 days off a week and only one every 4th week. Still trying to adjust to the new pay schedule being on salary. 13 days between paydays one period, then 18 days the next when payday falls on the weekend. 2024 may be a totally different scenario. Getting full bonuses this year may afford me some other options, and potentially this coming season as well, but buying some land is preferable than leasing/outfitter. I've always been against "renting" as if I am paying the same as a house payment I want it going towards equity on my end. Same goes for hunting, but we're not talking monthly payments plus expenses so it's not as bad to lease land or pay an outfitter. This season has humbled me, but so has the year and the past 3 months. Think I am going to put in for the IRAP program this coming year as well. Guessing it will be similar to the lake area hunt, but have a bit more pressure on it. Anything is something, but something is everything. Been fun following all your hunts this year, first time since its inception I don't have a kill in here ot entry for the contest. Never again, this thread is my season purpose. Let the soul searching begin.
Hoping to get down Saturday. Cameras on our property have been dead so think we may try prettyboy for the evening
That was purdy heavy cls74. Life twists n turns. Not killing a deer in a year aint a big deal. You did what you needed to do. Lot of people could learn from your past years experience. Bummer on the miss LC.
Dang man, that is rough. That last light got me on a few deer this year, including two really big bucks. At least your still in the game. My only suggestion is don't get stuck in that spot. Your first hunt is the best. So make a move closer and keep the deer on there feet. Good luck Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
I’ll go back to the same tree in the morning because I simply won’t walk in blind in the dark. After the morning sit I’ll move, especially since I scared the crap out of the buck and the two does that we’re feeding 60 yards away when I shot.
I’m set up and waiting on daylight. It feels a little eerie navigating through a big cedar thicket in the dark.
Watched a really good 8 point walk through at 55 yards just after daylight. Nothing since. On another note, deer season ended in Missouri yesterday. How do they know???
I’m thinking the movement is over for the morning. I’m going to sit until 9:30 (another hour), get down and look for a better stand location for the afternoon sit and tomorrow morning.
I was watching three does coming my way a few minutes ago. They were at 50 yards when they all looked to the west and bolted east. Two coyotes came running in and I understood. I don’t normally shoot coyotes but I was pretty ticked off so I made an exception when the big one stopped broadside 30 yards away.
Two reasons I guess. First, I just don’t really have anything against them unless they make me mad. Second, most of my hunting is done in the rocky Ozarks. A target as small as a yote isn’t going to slow my arrow down much so I’m almost guaranteed to destroy a broad head. Also, when I hunt Kentucky the crop farmer whose land I hunt doesn’t want them shot. Too many deer there.
