Took my youngest out today for his first “hunt.” we scouted a new piece of public today. He kept up with me for three hours and did great. We found an incredible rubline on a small ridge between two dried swamps. The rubline looked like it was leading into a pine thicket at the top of a draw.
I tried upload ing pics yesterday...not much luck - sorry. Here's another attempt at a blood pic. Went fishing on Erie today. The first 3 hours we caught 2 walleye. The next 4 hours we caught 19. Our limit was 24, 6 apiece. Big was about 8 pounds.
You would have liked this spot. It was a big peninsula sticking out into a lake. I found the first rubs right along the access trail 850 yards from the parking area. The trail ran NW to SE along the lake shore for 1200 yards to the water. The rubline cut NE 175 yards before I quit following it when my son got tired and was ready to go. Some of those rubs were fresh, like within the last week or so. Still had shredding on the edges. I definitely need to scout the area some more. We stopped right on the edge of the pine thicket where it dropped into a draw. Looked thick and buck nasty down there.
Heading out in 10 minutes I have about a 5 minute drive and 10 minute walk. I’ll post once I’m set up.
Some good tracks in the snow on the walk in. Slight breeze in my face. I think most of the movement is behind me though by the tracks. Curious to see if my camera is still taking pics. This will be the crime scene if anything happens.
Good Luck AM Killers! I'm stuck at work until Thursday. Headed back to Ohio this weekend to take a doe.
Depending on which part of the state you are in, it is secondary rut or prerut just beginning. I was in a spot that is most likely secondary rut.
Met a good guy from Illinois while scouting yesterday. In fact I've met some good dudes in the parking lots of some places this fall. I've been going at this hunting thing pretty much solo for a long time. Sure would like to have a few guys that I know that hunt the same areas...we could share info and help each other. Share in the experience.
Friendly reminder, Arkansas runs until the end of February. A three day nonresident license with two deer tags is $125. There is a three day weekend Feb 18 - 20
Set up in the back yard for the last 30 minutes. 2 young does were at my stand when I came in. Good to see deer out early. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Pretty much what I did this year. Been meeting the same people on public over the last few years. Now I exchange numbers and keep in contact with them. Kind of nice to have contacts of similar people that will help you out if needed. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
I lit up the wood stove before I came out. It must have took off, it's completely smoking me out and the woods behind me. Not sure if this will spook the deer or not. Haha or could be a good cover scent since I do burn every day! Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
No shots fired. Had same 2 fawns come back and walk under me. Then had 2 more deer come out about 100 yards out. One was a big doe, but never made it to me before dark. Got to about 75 yards. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
I made it to Wattensaw at about 1:00 pm today. It was a longer drive than normal because I stopped to fill up the truck in Pocahontas, AR and a kid (18 years old) came up to me almost crying. He was trying to get to Little Rock and he was stranded. I looked him over and he looked pretty clean cut and was dressed pretty nice. He opened his small bag to show me he didn’t have any weapons. I felt sorry for him so I made room for him in the passenger seat. At first I was going to take him to Hazen, AR which is right by where I was headed and it is only about 40 minutes from Little Rock, but on the way I just decided to take him all the way to his destination. It only took an extra hour and a half of my time but it was a really big help to him. Side note: Driving in downtown Little Rock sucks. Anyway, I got my stand put up and got rained on doing that. I was planning on waiting until morning to go out but the rain chance disappeared so I scrambled and got set up at around 4:00. I didn’t see anything, but this is a morning spot and now all my gear is in my tree and I’ll be back out in the morning.
