So there i was… haha. I got settled in and chilled for about an hour. I heard a grunt really close. Out pops a doe to my off side then a decent buck. She immediately ran away from me with him in tow followed by 3 more does. I was just happy to see some action cause im not lying going from 46 degrees to 26 in one day was brutal. Then this morning 3” of snow and blasting NW winds was zapping me. But i knew there was a few great bucks in here and my buddy just had an encounter with a bigger racked one last night. So i decided to stick it out knowing they would be moving. About 30 min after those deer ran off i decided to smack the horns together. I got pretty loud with it knowing i wasnt going to try again. So might as well make it sound like rumble in the jungle. 5 min later i here a stick break. Look over and this dude pops out and is waking straight to my tree on a mission. Hes coming to whoop some ass and take names later . I shot straight down on him. He dropped and didnt go anywhere. Was choking and spitting up blood. He flopped around and tried to get up to run and only made it another 20 yds. He would have died but i just wanted to end it. So i climbed down. He didnt see me. I snuck up and tried to put another one in him and it hit a small branch and sliced his side open. So i got a better angle and put one up into his heart. He still lived another few minutes. Incredible how strong these beasts are. Not normal deer. Old bucks have super powers. The end.
I haven't been on the LFTS thread much today. The weather here is almost identical to what you experienced and us southerners aren't used to this crap this early in the season. This morning we woke up to 3" of snow on the ground. It was 28 with a wind chill of 18 for a low this morning. Two days ago we were hunting and the high was 80 and the low was in the low 60's. This morning the wind off the snow was just brutal. I really just wanted to say congratulations on a great buck Shocker! You must be on cloud nine right now. I know I would be.
Thanks Chief. There are much more important things in life than deer but it does feel great to have the one you've been watching on your cams come in to your calling and drill him. He was the one i wanted even over the bigger rack ones we had pics of. He was definitely the boss. Tagged out in illinois. I dont think i ever have been before gun season. Guess ill be serving chilli and fetching beer next weekend haha. Nah ill be on nanny patrol
So sat in the corner of a cut cornfield tonight. Had a doe and two fawns come in but not close enough. Spent most the day talking to landowners and farmer and got in on a few properties.
Wish he would have been my first for the contest but i wont measure till tomorrow. Im guessing 140-145 like i initially thought. His body absolutely dwarfs his rack
Boom stick it is. Guess I should have been there yesterday afternoon...oh wait. The was the plan until i had to help my sister.... This might be the first time in I dont know how long since i didnt fill an early season bow tag.
I have literally been in your shoes, albeit not quite as nice of a buck. Great story and great job. Soak it in.
Yeah it’s 30 degrees right now. I’m not tracking until morning. I shot him at 5:40 pm. Don’t have a good feeling abt it, but I’m hopeful
