I hope you find her soon LC and the Gang!

I had a fin night hunting, but no shooting. I saw 2 fawns within 10 minutes of sitting down. I grunted about 45 minutes before dark. Shortly after grunting, I had a spike come in and 2 other bucks came in and sparred. Along with them were twin fawns. The button buck even joined the sparring with the little 6! Just before dark a doe finally showed up and collected her fawns. 45 minutes of deer around. Great times. 20221106_170913.jpg

Alright. We all got on the blood trail at about 8:00 pm. The extra eyes made a ton of difference. We ended up tracking it in tough terrain for 735 yards. The blood trail was fantastic in places and sparse in other places. At roughly 300 yards we saw eyes. She was bedded and still alive. I had to make a decision on whether to back out or bump her. Considering the hit I decided to push her and make her bleed. It definitely worked.

The blood trail was good again. We got to 735 yards and there she was again, alive and looking at us. At that point I made the decision to mark it and back out. At that point she was either going to live or die and I wasn't going to spend the entire night tracking through the Ozarks.

I'll go back to where she was laying in the morning. If she's there she's there and if she's not there she's going to live. I'm pretty much positive that she won't be there and she's going to live. I didn't really have a choice but to try to recover her tonight though. If you wound a deer you should put every effort into trying to find it.

The down side to all of this is that we did track her right by my stand in "my valley". I can't say it for certain, but I believe we just destroyed one of my best spots I was saving for the guests that are coming. It is a phenomenal buck hunting spot. The OnX screenshot that @Ridgerunner3 sent me shows my stand in my valley and we went right by it. At least we had the firebreak road to walk out on, but it was uphill. At least someone on the forums besides me knows now what I mean when I say getting to the stand in my valley is easy but getting out is a b***h.

I'll post a couple of pics when I finish this post. I'm on my laptop and the pics are on my phone.

This is a pic of the blood after we jumped her:

This is the track that Eric sent me. The mark in the right is where I shot her. The mark in the middle is a where we jumped her. The mark at the end is where she was when we left. And of course the stand icon is my stand in my valley.

You did the right thing. You are exactly right. If she's going to die she'll probably be right there or very close. If not, she'll probably live. But bumping her all night was definitely not what you want to do. Good luck to the recovery and to everyone there for hunting this week.

I wouldn't let it get to you too much. The ruining a spot I mean. Its November stay positive, and you never know.. But a month or so ago I shot a doe w/bow. Fell 25 yards from the hit. Butchered her another 75 from there. It's at my favorite spot, middle of a 75 acre wood lot in a clearing. We now trails to it so it's a central hub. Next day a 140 class mature 6x5 and a few does hung out there right below stand where I shot the doe for an hour or more and seemed relaxed. I know buck was mature cus hes got shot since and the euroed skull was heavy and big, too big for rack almost... 5+ all day, I'd gues 6+ on the downhill. So just give it a day or so then go sit with positive vibes.:)

I agree with you. I didn't mind jumping her once but when I saw her still alive the second time I knew it was time to back out. I have to admit that I was surprised at the blood trail after we jumped her, especially since it was almost 5 hours after the shot. To be honest, the fact that it was almost 5 hours after the shot when we jumped her the first time is pretty good evidence that she's going to live. I'm still going to go down into my valley and bust it up again to check one more time in the morning.

I'm sure you're right. The deer here are pretty sensitive to intrusion though.

Still, in a couple of days it'll probably be fine.

That just isn't possible. At this point I don't know exactly where I hit her but an entry and exit on the same side simply wasn't possible given the shot I made and the blood I saw on her side when she stopped.

For @Tony, I just can't explain the lack of blood on the arrow. If I had judged the shot only by the arrow I'd have said I barely nicked her, but she bled like crazy for over a half mile. There was no fat on the arrow so I know it wasn't an extremely low brisket hit. I saw what I saw and no-one can convince me otherwise.

The only thing I can attribute the blood trail to on a non-fatal hit is the fact that my Slick Trick was just wicked sharp which made a cut that just wouldn't stop bleeding.

I don't know how but I hit her where I said I did and I didn't hit a vital organ. She was so exhausted from loss of blood that I managed to get to within five feet of her the first time we found her.

The second time we found her we couldn't believe she made it as far as she did with the amount of blood she had lost.

All I can say is that's hunting. Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you.

Greg and I will go back down and see if she's there in the morning, but I don't expect her to be there.

Like I said before, if she's not there she survived the shot unless coyotes jump her. If they find her she is done and that is very likely.

I had one like this a few years back but it was a closer quarters shot and what I think ended up happening was my shot placement was perfect for a shot that was 10-15 yards further out. What I think ended up happening was my arrow never penetrated the body cavity and just went through her side and came out below the rib cage essentially at the bottom of the deer. I had very similar blood to yours and it went on for 500+ yards. I hope you find her but 100% agree if she isn’t where you left her in the AM I think she will live. All this late night soothing of my new born lets me keep up to date here…. Lol

    Haha! thanks brother!!

0230, 67 degrees...wtf! I'm not going deep this morning due to the heat and recovery/retrieval time. The good news is, any deer gets an arrow. day 1/6. Good luck everybody!!
