Man I hope it works out and you find him I couldn’t imagine having to wait as much as you have I would be pacing a hole in the floor Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Good luck! Like I said on our team thread, had a feeling someone was going to put bone on the board! Can't wait to hear about the recovery! Good luck!
Are you kidding me?! Grey skys all morning. The sun comes out blue skies and I'm getting rain on. Then add thee SSE winds are actually wsw winds. Just barely scripting where I hope they are on that property. The golden rod is thick up in there. What I'm really hoping for is a buck traveling the gully up through. Ahhh I have 2 hours to sit here and hope...Hubby is working the crew over time this week. No hurry on the chicken. Left at 5 home at 6. He's too old for this crap.
It is so quiet out here I've been hearing this very light sound. Like a single gurgle or light pop. I realize now I'm hearing the fibers in the trees stretching with each breeze. How strange.and there's a grunt up behind me
That was all for me this morning, got down and hung a stand for my dad for his rutcation next week. Got lunch and an espresso, going to grab a shower and head back out, going to a little pinch point between two bedding areas. The deer numbers aren’t as high on this state land as they are on my gun club property, but if I was a buck I would probably have to pass this spot checking for does, there is typically a scrape that opens up here as well. Going to scout my way in and go from there. Not sure what my back up plan is
Tight central hub on a ridge system. High ground bench with some bigger rubs and scrapes. Beautiful country out here. Not a soul in sight.
Am I the only one that thinks you should have gone in at first light and at least tried without getting a dog involved? The meat won't be salvageable I'm guessing now?
I agree bucksnbear. Not sure why ypu wouldn't look for the deer yourself at first light. You had good blood, why not follow it this morning.
Feel like a pile of crap but getting ready to go sit on the corn field tonight. Will think about this weeks plans while I’m sitting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
because it was drizzling last night, most likely washing away a blood trail. If he went in this morning and couldn't find the deer...then he would have stunk up the entire area and a dog would be of little use......
I was under the impression that shocker went in this morning and that’s how he figured out deer started circling back. I probably just miss understood. Agree with Swamp. It makes the dogs job harder if someone goes in and tracks or grid searches. Best just to stay out if you are bringing a dog in.
I went in and peaked. I glassed and glassed. I walked along side some of the runs that led away from that bed. Never saw another drop of blood. Did a huge loop around a cockle burr patch that was near by thinking he may have run into it. If it wouldnt have rained here i would have but almost all the blood is washed away that i could tell. I was back and forth. I think the meat may be ok. It is still in 50’s here. Got down to 49 last night. May be questionable. I know its a tough call. Im Very conflicted
There are a lot of variables going on here. I think the dog is the best way to go. Especially if anything got washed away as blood goes.
Thats what he kept telling me. At least i kept some distance and i did have enough sense to wear a different pair of boots than i had on when i tracked last night
Unless you are 100 percent positive it's a dead deer, I think you did the right thing. I've never brought in a tracker before, but looking back on things I wished I would have instead of tracking the area up. From what I understand the less track there is in there the better chance the dog has at finding it. You looked at the situation in the morning and you made the call. Don't second guess yourself.
100% this… this happens, and while it sucks, you are the only one in your shoes for this specific situation. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Hate to tell you this, but a boot change isn't going to change your scent. You might be able to mitigate the fact that your scent is all over the place. Ask the handler if you should keep your distance from the dog until the tracking has been underway for a bit. Let the dog try and key in on the blood and deer scent. Your scent will become "background" after a while. My current lab has the problem if my scent is all over, she will key on my scent. If I want to take her out, I need to do it on a fresh trail. My old lab? Didn't matter. He learned very quickly what he was out there for. Although I trained him to follow the blood, he could and would scent cast like an upland bird dog and find the deer. The confidence your tracker has in his dog will go a long way to having a happy resolution to this track.
I feel the same way. I rather go in my self over a dog. I hate losing meat over a set of antlers. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Just to be clear, this is what I do and don't expect anyone to follow me. In Shockers situation, he is doing what he feels right. It just eats me up when I lose meat. As I'm getting older I enjoy the meat as much as the antlers. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
