So to add to my new public land adventures, currently in the county I'll be hunting there is a cougar traveling through. The odds of me encountering it are probably along the lines of Powerball winning, but it's the back of the mind brain processing that comew into play From what they say it originated in NE and is collared with tracking. The range of some of these cats is impressive, almost makes you wonder about homing capabilities built in like a homing pigeon. Is it a breed of the endamgered eastern cougar born elsewhere and instinctivly traveling "home"?
I still remember how it felt when I had one walk right by me while I was hunting behind my house. It was an amazing experience.
Never seen one in person and have only seen 2 bobcats. Bobcats are being regulated by DNR and limited hunts are being done statewide, some areas excluded. They have been, yet deny, introducing bobcats throughout the state for a breeding population. Introducing the season IMO proves their intent. The mountain lion introduction I don't yet believe, no need for a big cat population when you have other predators with numbers. Still a bit concerning with all of these confirmed cougar sightings each year. All originate from another state, yet they travel similar directions hundreds if not a thousand or more miles and still "traveling" Are these travelers relocated animals or just roamers? Facts and theories unite....
Truth be told, I have no desire to shoot a mountain lion or bobcat. Currently numbers of each are in check. That said, SSS would have been in play if told to. One thing I forgot to mention on the coyotes was my Uncle told m if I seen a coyote kill it. I've said on here multiple times if I had a big buck and a coyote both in range at the same time the coyote gets ths first arrow every time. Just my promise/commitment to him.
In the car at the gun club debating if I want to sit in this drizzle and 60 degrees for an hour before work, or if I want to sit in the car till first light and do some scouting figure out where to set up for tomorrow, Friday and Saturday morning when the weather is going to be better
Good luck everyone! Small Bucks in VT have been moving. No sign of the older deer yet. Its early antlerless Muzzleloader the next 4 days, so I'll be out doing that. Depending on how that goes, it's also archery, turkey and bear season.
