Your doing all you can man, whatever the outcome is that’s part of the game! I’m sure you replayed it more times then you can count. I been there b4 and I know a bunch others have too.
My buddy put a single lung shot on a big buck last year. Three days later he was back on camera, looking sickly. He found him dead a month later. Those big bucks have an incredible will to live. I hope you get a dog there to help find him and if the dog cannot find the buck, at least you'd have a big of closure....for now. Great job putting in so much effort. Do you recall if his head was up or down when you shot?
Thanks i spoke with another tracker. Both 100% agree that its not wise to track at this point. If fatal it will most likely be like the buck your buddy found dead later. I appreciate their honesty they wouldnt be hesitant if they thought they could possibly make a successful track and both agreed with my plan to get down there and hang cams. These were only 2 cell cams left at rural king. Hope they are ok.
I think that’s it for this sit. I’m going to pack up, climb down and take this climber to a new spot.
Hopefully you get some pics of him. Sounds like you have put forth the effort. Now just need to get back in the stand and get some redemption.
I sighted in the bow again yesterday. I must have bumped the sight pretty hard to be 6" to the left at 20 yards. Good to go now. I've been contemplating my strategy for next year and years to come. My goals first: 1. Mature bucks, one deer or two a year is enough venison for me. Options on the table (I'm not knocking on doors or writing letters) 1. Traveling to hunt public land in various states -Would require a van or trailer converted to a hunting rig to live in (needs the required amenities), process deer in, and keep the meat from spoiling. 2. Hit the easy button and just hunt 10-12 days a year in Illinois at the DIY outfitter I went to from 2013-15. 3. Embrace the suck, continue to suck, be October's b!tch, work harder than 98% of other hunters to have a deer sighting, put in more time, put in more effort, accept the fact that killing a deer is not something that will happen every season for me, and quit my b!tching and work my way through it. Option 2 sounds so damn good after all the hard work I put in. Option 1 sounds awesome, but so many moving parts logistics wise and would require a significant financial investment, same with option 2 actually. Reality is option 3. Embrace the suck, quit my b1tching, work my way through it and become a murderer in these woods. Make these woods and deer my b!tch, become a legend known to none...... Okay, I'll shut up now
No shortage of folks here that would happily put you on a hunt in their state, I'm guessing. So if you go with option 1 at least you'd have company and probably some intel. I'm guessing you are roughly or less than 11 hours from some pretty great public land in OH. I'm starting to plan an out of state hunt there next year and I think a year or 2 ago there were a bunch of us that talked about and never did all meet up there. There are some studs there, even on public. Hell dude, I would love to see you in on a hunt where you actually see deer more than on a blue moon on a Tuesday that one time....
I'll challenge this - I've driven my 2005 Honda Accord with a few coolers to Colorado to hunt elk. Just need Ice for coolers. A deer is smaller than an elk - don't need 2 big coolers; you can also choose to quarter or debone it -- just need ice. For sleeping, I've got a small tent, sleeping pad and 20 degree bag. Not suggesting this is the way I want to live 11+ mths per year, but works for a couple weeks or few boondoggles a year.
You're welcome with me in my state anytime, Joe. Just say the word! Ohio is another great option for you as well
Im gonna say something wild. Not really. Lets get to looking at all the public properties in your area. Totally break free and pop around hunting aggressively in new areas. Go to the best cover and overlooked places each hunt. For the next month hunt like that. Go for broke and keep it moving. I would be glad to help in map scouting (certainly no big buck expert but I can look at maps).
