It's so cold out here! 32, tarp blew off my peppers and eggplant last night. So much for those now. One deer came through at about 6:30. Felt something was up and never got close enough. So quiet the baby step walk in still made noise. It went past cam so I'll pull it when I leave. 2 jackets and an insulated hoodie and I'm getting a tad shakey. In bird nest stand not a blind. Will give it until 8. They have hammered these plots. He just stepped out. Spike
3 spike ,1 doe and a fawn. All but one spike feeding away. Other spike is under mulberry trees. Wish he'd leave as well. Shakes are bad now...oh thank God there he goes. Fun morning and lots of info in movement. Did not come in or leave as expected
Well I'm back home. .the shakes got so bad it felt like my back was breaking.. geez I was well layered and seriously nothing tight. I have to fold my pants half way around me and belt them. Look at my selfie and you can see 2 safety pins on either side...even my head got smaller ..lol Those deer did nothing as expected, save the one spike and I had him at 18 yrds for a bit. I will have to hunt that area farther in either in the afternoon or do a 3/4 down hill around and back up hill to get to the back blinds and stands they all walked past. I maybe able to make it to the hub blind but leaf fall is making things pretty loud. There was dead silence out there this a.m.. My 5 min walk took over a half hour. Pic I got of 2 spike that came in...and plots...could not hold to take anything else that wasn't a big blur.
Couldn't really tell what you were wearing, but a good wind stopping layer, when windy, can make a huge difference. Sometimes, this is just my rain gear, with some warmth layer under...less layers, but that layer keeps the wind from robbing your body heat.
I had a thermal hunting turtle neck a fleece pull over, fleece lined wind breaker an insulated hoodie. Light wool socks with camo fleece socks over that. Thermal leggings and fleece pants under light insulated hunting pants.. I have not purchased any new Hunting clothes other than the fleece wind breaker. I've dropped 5 sizes so I'd have to add a few more layers than that to get close to tight...lol This cold thing is even an issue in our house now. That said no real complaints I have no plans to plump back up now that I know what the cause was. I just need to adjust to it...thus the 3 New blinds this summer. Each with a blanket to wrap in. . Im also not cleaning trails with the leaf blower this season so more hunts will focus on going in just at legal or 9-2 hunts and the 2 to close ones. I was out an hour before legal trying to beat them in...which actually worked . Thanks for the ideas
Speaking of which you guys have any thoughts on the prospect of shooter bucks showing up when I'm sitting on a bunch of yearlings and young doe? I have a thought on it but looking to see what you think....
Id say bucks at this time are surveying their environments and will come out and check up on what does are around for future intel, plus if those does have been in the field for a long time and haven't been attacked, then they will feel more comfortable coming out.
May have gotten some good intel this morning. Called a fish and wildlife manager and asked him about a section of wildlife refuge. Told him from the aerial map that I could see it wasn't vehicle accessible. He responded by saying its never been vehicle accessible, but by the end of the month they will have a parking lot and road put in there for sportsmen, but no one will really know. About 200 acres of swamps butted up against crop fields. I may burn a couple days in that swamp come late October into November and go in blind.
Temps will be favorable several times this week. Time to be aggressive in some of your best spots during the early part of the season. A good entry and a good exit and it will be minimally invasive. If you haven't done this and aren't consistently successful during your buck rut hunting, go outside of your comfort zone and attack. Trust me.
