Picked up my habitat stamp and tags tonight. Ugh, had to buy 4 tags. 2 either sex and 2 antlerless. Was the cheapest way to go about it, but hindsight being 20/20 I should have waited on the 2nd combo permit. Last minute rushing had me screwed up in thought, but if I have a chance to kill 2 antlerless opening morning I made the right choice. I'm not above orphaning a yearling and shooting that yearling upon return Plan is still unchanged, I'm the only one of the 3 of us hunting opening morning. One is going to scout his way in early afternoon and the other sitting it out completely. Guessing I'm going to have to find some acorns or some ort of travel hub. Pretty flat terrain for the most part, and hopefully with the canopy up not overly thick to walk through. Ignore the blotcged up res, drew from memory and had the dropback way too far east.
Glad you posted this, have to clean up the battery pod for my headlamp. Opened it up today and 2 of the batteries started leaking and corroded the springs.
Doe from last night came out and immediately picked me off. My wind was perfect… But she knew. One decent 7pt on the cameras otherwise small bucks, does, and fawns. Taking a few days off to let stuff settle. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
In less than 24 hours I'll be in the stand for the first sit of the 2022 season here in texas!! LFG!!!
So now that the seasons going to go full tilt how are you hunting? This is in how do you choose your days other than physical weather. Do you go by the pressure, the moon? I never do well in full moon and I do check the pressure. Which will be down tomorrow and drop hard Wednesday/Thursday. This as with wind will have me choosing stand sites differently. What are your strategic variables?
I hunt when I have the time and energy. Deer can be killed in all types of terrain, temps, etc. The only thing that makes me hyper focus is an October cold front that pushes temps down quick.
Afternoons only basically anytime I have a chance to be in the woods until October cold fronts then mornings are in play as well. I have 3 1/2 months to harvest a mature buck+mature doe. Seems like a really long time, but in reality it's not.
Give me high pressure and lows in the 30's first half of November and I'll be there. Always the best time for me.
I hunt with any free time I have, don't let anything else dictate that. Make the adjustments as needed once in the field. Play the wind and hunt fresh sign. And try incorporate active feeding to intercept the deer. I know deer move more with certain situations, but they eat every day and live in any weather conditions, so I hunt any chance I can. But I have started to not like hunting in heavy rain, those days I usually find something better to do. Unless the rain is to stop a couple hours before sun up or sun down, then I will be out there and tough out the rain for a couple hours. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
