He was a cool guy. Tells me come the rut he hunts about 150 miles south of St Louis. He is a regular old Bad A for 79. Nice and could be. We laughed at the hitchhikers all over him and I told him about me getting them bad lately. Went on to tell him if he gets a deer yell out up by the end of the public and id help. He responded by saying he had already promised his wife he'd be home shortly. Haha. Handshake like a vice grip.

He must hunt somewhere close to my area then. St. Louis is right around 150 miles north of me.

Brett, when you say “hitchhikers” there are different kinds.

Have you seen many of these?

Lol what an absolute **** show. Left at 330. Got to the land in 5 minutes. 15 minute walk to spot. Pick tree. Take the next hour setting up 3 sticks and the stand. The amount of noise I made is comical.

Holy crap! Look at all those Tick Trefoil seeds!

I actually love those things. They taste like soybeans. As a kid I used to sit on stand, pick them off and eat them like sunflower seeds.

Actually I still do when I get some on me. I’ve never gotten them on me that bad though. I’d be snacking the entire sit.

Oh, and I’ve read that deer eat them too.

Just sitting here thinking how this side of the farm is even going to work until crops are harvested… I can’t push the edge every time I come in here. Deer will be getting busted out of the fields every time.

Have to talk to the neighbor and ask if I can park at his place and walk through the corn I think. When I was going through it today it was so damn loud. Basically my only option I think.

    Good stuff guys!
I'm gonna divulge something I started doing about 30 years ago.
I don't think I've ever explained this before on a forum.?
Bear with me on this for those that have this option.
OK, when younger, I had 1000's and 1000's of acres (privae)acres to hunt.
I grew up using screw in steps and hang on stands.i was as agile as a monkey. No problem.
I tore my rotor cuff about 30 years ago and screwing in steps started to suck.

I came up with this idea that worked SO WELL..
I was kinda poor so I only had a few portable stands.
But I hunted often 60 days a year.
Instead of using screw in steps, I'd prep my trees (many) using a cordless drill. Bore holes with a 5/8 bit at intervals that I'd usually use screw in steps. I'd bore the holes about 3 " deep.
Then I'd cut copper water pipe in 3" lengths and drive them in hole.
1/2" carage bolts were cheap then.
    7" long.
The bolts slipped into the pipe and made an awesome /cheap way to climb trees.
If I was worried about someone finding my spot, I'd pull the bolts ot when done and stash them at the bottom of the tree and cover the, with debris.

Did this for years. Worked so well.
Show up, stick in the bolts, climb and hang a stand.
I used copper pipe so not to hurt a future loggers.
It really works great if you have the place and time to prep trees ahead of time.
    Memory lane.:moose:

Left my bow and stand in the tree so I could see how the walk across the corn field would be. Not bad without the bow but not happening if I have it with me. Talking with the neighbor tomorrow it is!

Saw 2 does and 3 fawns at 50yds. The one nanny definitely smelled my trail and was on alert. Didn’t bust me or anything. Also could have swore I heard a deep grunt in the thick stuff behind me. Just once so I’m sure it was my imagination.

Same wind tomorrow so I’ll be back with hopefully the better entrance.

Wish I could hunt tomorrow, first hard frost of the year Friday morning. VT doesnt open till Saturday. My target Buck has shown up on camera twice in the last week, which means hes probably been around quite a bit more(cameras cover so little ground). He likes the old logging roads about 3/4 the way up the hill behind the house. Good 2.5-3.5yr old mountain Buck.

I'll be up in a tree very early Saturday morning with a heater vest. Hopefully sitting still an hour before shooting time. Good luck everyone hunting today.

I’m in route, going for one of the bucks that skirted me on the ridge a few days back. Got a tricky wind but I’m gonna try and make it work.

Here’s my scouting trip this morning, at the gun club watching the lower range to see if anything crosses, I have a tree picked out in the swamp to the right to hunt if I see some action here this morning. After 30 minutes to an hour I’m heading up the hill to check my camera and make a game plan for Saturday. Saw a doe and a fawn crossing the road right where I turn onto the property, only about 100 yards away. This property is most likely the highest deer population option I have. Yesterdays scouting trip was nice to bump up 4 though
