LC, that's why they call it hunting and not shooting. One is hard and one is easy. One is full of surprises and the other is very regular/predictable. Both are fun though! Nurse that ego back to health and get back to it on your home range!

They have whacked the crap out of our area past few years. My cousin was up last weekend to put out cams and said didn't look like any new cutting over the winter. Thank God, there was no patterning them past 2 seasons.

It wouldn't be so bad if the loggers followed to their contract. Our area was supposed to be a select cut-not cutting trees under 3". They didn't cut those trees but they did run them over. Sure defeated the intent.

Will be interesting to see what regrows. They cut hard maple and select cedar. No poplar in the area so who knows how long to regrow.

Hard maple here regrow like weeds. My woods only look so clean due to a heavy mature canopy and browsing. NOT from just deer, caterpillars mainly but lots of small game as well.

Last night I glassed 5 doe, 3 fawn, and 2 wide racked short tined 8 pts. Sparing in the farmers clover. You can certainly tell the beans have been harvested, the deer are back.
Also the out of state hunters camp is up for sale. Which means they MAY have been told the 200 acres around them are now no longer theirs to hunt. The camp only owns 5 acres. That will change things big time here.

We actually looked to buy it when we first moved here. THE owner would not sell any more than the 5 acres with the house. So it v wasn't worth it. Then she moved back in and took it off the market, I became her medical alert life line person until they placed her into a nursing home and her son sold the place to the out of staters. and would not even consider an offer from us. She had tried to sell us the farm land but legally couldn't, long story there.

Man this devise is on a roll today...lol

    Good to know.

My favorite stand tree and its surrounding back cover trees somehow escaped the axe. At the very least, it can still be a gun season stand.

Will have to break out some of my older, less reliable trail cams, to check out what is left of the area.

Eventful couple days at elk camp. Sorry this is long.
I got up there Thursday evening. Two hunting partners have been there all week. Found out one of them shot a 6x6 on Tuesday evening. Came in to them and the shot was a mere 10 yards. Elk was broad side but apparently decided to spook right as the arrow was released. Hit it back too far. Full pass through. They did everything right. Backed out and gave it all night. Blood started right away 20 yards from the shot, but only for the next 80 yards, then absolutely zero blood. Think some intestines must've plugged the holes. They grid searched their rear ends off for two days. They set On-X to track and they carpet bombed the entire area. Walked all creeks and checked all water sources. Step counter showed they'd walked 20 miles in the two days they looked. Shooter so disgusted he won't hunt anymore this year.
Friday morning I got up really early and hiked into some Potlatch ground. They are allowing foot traffic but no motorized. No one else willing to hike in to my area so I had the whole mountain to myself, was really nice. Got into a group of 5 cows, 2 calves, and a bull. Bull only gave 3 little wimpy squeals and didn't want to play. Had a calf at 25 yards, passed. Would've shot a cow but closest was 70 yards. Couldn't get anything else to bugle.
Hiked out and had some breakfast at camp. I was all ready to head back out for the rest of the day when a guy we know came into camp, about 12:30 p.m. He hunts up there every year solo, takes the whole month off. Only interested in nice bulls...so he decided that morning to shoot a big cow back in some really thick, steep terrain a long ways from his camp. No way he would've saved the meat if the 3 of us hadn't been there and willing to help. Took us until 6:30 that night to get it to his camp and ready to head for a cooler.
Saturday morning I went back up onto the Potlatch ground but across a big canyon and higher up, to a place we call "the knob". Very windy with rain coming soon. I got a bull to chuckle back to my calls around 8:30 a.m., he was down over the side in some really thick timber. Wind was sketchy to head to him from the top so I had to walk down and around to get underneath him, took me about 40 minutes. He either moved off in that time or just bedded and shut up, couldn't ever get him to respond again. I get cell service on that side of the canyon so I checked my phone. Found out my 7 year old had a really bad case of Croup the night before, so bad my wife called an ambulance. They were able to give him a steroid and breathing treatment so he could breathe well again without having to take him to the hospital, but wife had been up all night.
I hiked back to camp, packed up and headed home. He was doing much better by the time I got home but my wife went straight to bed for about 6 hours.
One more weekend before the season closes. Sounds like I'll be solo next weekend, will stick a bit closer to camp due to being by myself.

It'll have to be before fall if I go back. That property is an odd one. For some reason, when gun season opens the deer actually vacate the property and don't return until late season. Probably because they've only been gun hunted for years and years.

The owner of the property still swears there aren't any good deer there because he only gun hunts and doesn't run cameras. I hunted 2 1/2 days and saw 13 bucks, five of which were 130" or better and the 8 point from yesterday evening that I'll bet you anyone on this forum would have shot.

Shooting and sharpening broadheads today. If anyone knows where I could find some Magnus 2 blades at a 100 or a 125 grains I would really appreciate it. They have been sold out for what seems like months.

I got lucky and got my bow shops last pack of black hornets, but last time I was at bass pro they had stingers I think. Check their site out if you haven't already. Magnus has been 8 weeks behind since August I think.

I'll be in a stand by 415 today. Absolutely no idea what to expect, but in the past, on this wind there should be some movement by this spot. Weather is perfect for September. 3 years ago on this day I shot my first bow buck on a similar weather front very close to where I'll be sitting later.

Good luck Eric. I'll be getting on stand about 3:00. The high today here is supposed to be 72 and the low tonight is forecast to be 48. That's a 30 degree temperature drop from the low temps a day ago. I don't care what the wind is doing, I'm betting the deer are going to be moving.

That also means I need to get some of my mid-weight clothing washed. Sunday morning I was sitting in just a short sleeve T-shirt and was dripping sweat. Three days later I'm going to have to wear layers on the morning sit. Pretty wild.

I was thinking I might take my frustrations out on a big doe if she walked by this afternoon, but with the full moon, the rain and the temperature swing I'll let them walk if they show up.

I don't have any good bucks on camera here yet but I know they're in the area. I kind of hope a 110" buck doesn't walk by though.

Why? Because I know me.

He might have some luck on eBay, but I will never buy a broadhead from Amazon again.

I did one time a few years ago. What I got looked exactly like Slick Tricks right down to tiniest detail on the package, but they weren't real Slick Tricks. The blades were weak, brittle, and wouldn't take an edge when I tried to sharpen them. Even the ferrule, which is practically indestructible, bent a little on one after a pass through into the ground.
