Damn, were you able to get a good look at impact? I know you mentioned scapula, but was that based on sight or sound? Can't remember if you use lighted nocks or not. Hopefully something shows itself to get on the track.

I’m not sure if I hit the on-side scapula or off side shoulder.

    No luck finding the arrow.

We’re backing out for a while and we’ll
    Go back.

    Good luck LC!!

What a great opening day. I’m journaling my hunts this year.

    Hunts
    9/18 morning - North End Swamp-10 deer total. 1 4 point, 4 does, 5 fawns.

    9/18 evening - North end swamp - 8 deer. 3 does, button buck, 4pt, 2 fawns, 1 unknown

Those are totals. I can see a long way and some were 250-300uds away.

    Okay, I need some advice.
We found the arrow 20 yards into the woods. Definitely on-side shoulder blade and only about 5” of penetration it looks like.

After I picked up the arrow I saw eyes 50-60 yards away. It was him. We hit him with the super bright stream light and he didn’t get up and run. We shut he lights off, marked the spot, room a compass bearing and backed out.

The buck never did get up. He’s a mature deer also. He as to be hurting.

Even though I didn’t get much penetration that head had to have reached the on-side lung and the way the arrow was moving when he ran it may have shredded that lung.

So, how long should I wait before I go back?

I could use some tips quickly I don’t have any experience with this scenario.

I’d give him as much time as you can without the meat spoiling. I deer with one lung can go a good ways. It is a good sign that he didn’t get up. Good luck.

I'm hoping someone with more experience will chime in, but from everything I've read, If you push him, he could run miles on one lung. I think you should let him be overnight..... I could be way wrong though..

Wait as long as you think temps are good for. He's not dead yet so the clock has not started for meat going bad.

Are you willing to shoot at night to recover? Not sure on the legalities of it, but you always see videos of tracks where the hunter has bow ready well after dark.

Not an easy answer with a possible one lung shot, they can go quick or for miles.

Not sure how far he was from POI, but he is hurting if you got that close to him without him getting up or jumping up. Do you wait him out or push him hoping to bleed him out? Easier call in the dsytime when you can take a follow up shot if neccessary.

I'm of no real help, but trying to play both sides of the equation.

The way it sounds is that you have busted through the shoulder blade and possibly get one lung. For him not to get up and run sounds like he must be hurt really bad. I will give him at least a couple of hours. What did the blood look like on your arrow?
