Found out today my Aunt is selling the property I've hunted since 2007. Really wish there was a way I could purchase it, but no way I could swing 2 mortgages.
I've known it was going to happen since my uncle passed, a lot of land and upkeep for a widow in her 60's. I'm just thankful I had the luxury of hunting it for the past 15 years and plenty of mounts and antlers hanging around to reflect on.
June 5th and I'm already eating shotgun tag soup
Between this and gas prices, may not be a lot of hunting this coming season.
One HARD reality about hunting is,, unless you OWN the land, you will eventually lose access to it,
Especially theast 20 years.
Farmer "Joe " let most that asked hunt.
Fast forwards... Joe dies and leaves the land to punk nephew.
Nephew never hunted a day in his life but is a "its mine" now.
Shuts down anyone 7nless there is a dollar amount involved.
Seen it many times.
Luckily it is nothing like that.
I hate to see the land leave the family that has owned it for a century or more, but understand the burden that was placed on my aunt when he succumbed to cancer.
If it isn't the memories that will haunt you, it's the burden of maintenance and taxes.
Rough stuff man. A lot going on with that and I'm sorry for you. That being said, enjoy yourself this fall. Find some place new and explore. Win or "lose".
Well as a tax payer I can't say I do not blame the "punk nephew". Nothing in life is free.
25 yrs ago I told hubby we will be buying land now, they are not making more of it and There are ZERO guarantees to your Dads hunting camp. Well he does have his hunting camp and I have my hunting home lands.
I said no to any other hunter but family and life is good. He gets the Oh hi buddy phone calls every year mid summer . You know the guys that do not say boo all year but hunting season. The ones that if he says yes come with JUST their beer, no food ,use his electric , water ,food ,shoots a deer or 2 then leaves. LIKE we have all kinds of money to pay for their good time.
So a reminder to guys, some one pays for all those things. NOTHING IS CHEAP. There is a huge difference in feeling like a good guy and made to feel like a schmuck.
Man I love this thread. Just went back through and read a bunch of pages during the rut and around the time I killed my buck. Some excellent hunts get documented in this thread!
Might have another hunting spot lining up. Will have to see how it goes the next few months. Coworker who I also went to Highschool with said I could hunt with him on a property he picked up last season. No one else hunts it. It's basically all ag fields with 3 strips of trees and some CRP strips running through them. Holds deer, he was showing me some trail cam and phone pics last year. Had a big 10 he was trying to get on but never did.
The only caveat to it is figuring out if its just while he's hunting. He doesn't use vacation for hunting like I do. Plus to it is it is only a 15-20 minute drive and huntable both mornings and evenings.
Would hate to be bound by when he wamts to hunt, but beggars can't be choosers.
Damn Clint, sorry to hear about you losing that property. I hope things work out for you in the potential new spot! I don't think we could handle your complaining if you were to hunt on public land!! LOL!
This is gonna be one hell of a challenging season for me. I'd feel a little better if I wasnt so close to a big city. New job new lands. Only one thing to do....chew bubble gum and kick butt, and I'm all outta bubblegum.
I feel like you were just started getting the hang of your new area of Virginia. Now off to something completely new. Gonna be a fun experience. Hopefully being midwest now the hunting will be better. One positive thing is you don't have to deal with them damn bears anymore! Lol

It sucks, but I completely understand and fully expected it to happen eventually. There's always a chamce a neighboring owner buys it up just to secure their lands. Maybe then I can ask for permission to continue hunting that tract.
Wishfull thinking and highly unlikely, but dreaming I myself could purchase it is even more unrealistic.
That said, my hunting will be very limited, if at all this year. This entire year has kicked me in the nuts every step of the way, actually started last 2 weeks of December with Covid, and have decided to end this year and start next year anew.
Rather than taking the majority of November off, I'll be in Florida from Christmas Day through January 6th instead.
I'll still have November 3 day weekends if I so choose, and I might a time or two, but I feel I need an escape more than I need another deer in the freezer. I still have plenty of that.
You hunting as a resident or have to do non? Think Missouri is fair priced either way.
Good thing is your gear should still be good as you'll likely see similar conditions.
As of mid July I'll be a Missouri resident.
Man...Brett, you'll really enjoy it. My one complaint about leaving MO for NC is the difference in the deer hunting. I'll still get on em and still enjoy the pursuit, but it won't be the same. Tags are cheap. Does and bucks are fat. Opportunities are abundant. Enjoy the ride.
