    It’s been a heck of a day.

The buck was smaller than I thought he was because he was just a small bodied deer. I have to say that I couldn’t be happier though.

We got him back to the cabin and skinned and quartered him without gutting him. I’ve already gutted a gut shot deer that had lain overnight once this season. It’s not an experience I wanted to repeat.

I had a lot of clean up to do afterwards and then I had to go all the way back to my stand to retrieve my fanny pack and Ozonics. During that trip I fell over on my bike.

I had to ride around a tree across the road. I did it before with no issues, but this time two briar vines snagged my left foot on the pedal. I ground to a halt and started to fall left. Since my left foot was pinned by the briars all I could do was brace for impact.

    It didn’t hurt much.

I’m all finished now and believe it or not I have all my gear ready and I’m going to the “car body” stand tomorrow morning. The wind is right for that group of bucks that we’ve seen there. I do have one tag left.

Kill or no kill that will be my last sit this trip.

I am so stiff, sore and tired but it’s a great day!!

    It's been a full day.

I feel fortunate to have recovered that buck. I knew he was dead, but what I didn’t know was how little he was quartering away. He was much more straight in than I thought.

Here’s the entry wound. A very formidable entry hole for a Grim Reaper broadhead:

Here’s the exit wound, such as it was. The broadhead barely punctured the hide and gave us the little blood to start the trail:

I didn’t even gut this deer. I did the no-gut quartering, but looking at the entry and exit wounds I assume the four blade mechanical broadhead shredded one lung and that was enough.

The arrow was still in him when we found him but he was lying on the entry wound side
So the lighted nock didn’t aid in recovery at all.

At least my arrow survived to fly again.

Oh, and even though it’s 29 January the antlers were still solidly attached. We didn’t try dragging him by the antlers, of course, but they took a beating and didn’t fall off.

One last post for the night:

Of all the pics taken this is my favorite. It’s at the “meat pole” at our cabin.

That's not the entry point I had envisioned. For some reason I was thinking entry in the brisket since you mentione he came in straight to you. Made the recovery pic with a gut exit confusing with 1/4 of the arrow sticking out

That entry would have had me worried as well. One of those did it skirt the ribcage deals.

Did you peel back the hide on that side to see if it shattered ribs?

How many hunts left after tomorrow?

The broad head went through the leading edge of the shoulder blade.

That area stunk too much for me to even consider digging deeper.

This sit tomorrow morning will be my last sit for this trip. I’m about spent now.

I still have until the end of February to fill my last tag.

Last question, was that a trailer made for the bike or a deer hauler made to work on it?

You looked a bit Evil Kneivel in that video and taking hand off the handlebar to boot

Kinda questioning myself about the 4 wheeler choice now, but with the snow on the horizon realize I can't push snow with an ebike so may accept it

I still like those bikes though
