I bet you are pumped. To be able to have the opportunity on a 130" - 140" buck this late in the season is unreal. Good Luck this morning!
I’m set up in the other spot. A single deer of some kind walked in on me while I was setting up. I figure I know what that was.
Three deer fed their way out of the cedar thicket 35 yards away a few minutes before legal light. It was too dim to see what they were. By the time it was light enough to see they were in the thick cover on the other side of the road. It would be nice if deer would come into bow range during shooting light.
Quiet as a mouse. Peace to my ears and eyes. Cant beat it. Usually takes me a couple hrs of walking to stop feeling guilty that I'm not doing something "productive" for my family. Best medicine.
Heck of a day. Glad you had success after all of your time and effort. Dandy buck to shoot this time of year. Awesome. LC - sure hope you get a chance on a deer tonight!
Found a good connector ridge as the deer round an inlet on the lake. I couldn't figure out why it was all rubbed up last season. Then today I went down and walked the creek until I found a big creek trail crossing. That side ridge is the fastest way up for bucks from one side of the lake to the other toward thicker cover. I started calling the place rub ridge in my head then renamed it Ruby Ridge. Haha
Glad to see you out scouting already! I've got this weekend to do some hunting in MD, then its on to scouting back home in PA... and probably carrying the 17hmr or 12ga for small game
I’m back at camp. No more deer moved through that area. Im not going to go back there this evening. I’m going to make a move on that buck. Ive been studying the map and I can set up for a NE wind and have a chance at him. I’ll have almost a half mile walk through the woods after I park my bike. I’m not looking forward to that but it could be worth it. I’ll be setting up somewhere around the left end of the red distance line here.
I’m set up. It only took me a little over a half hour to ride the bike in, lock it and walk in. As it turns out I’m only 720 yards from the bike. It wouldn’t be a bad walk if it weren’t for all the little honeysuckle vines on the ground. It took another half hour to find a tree, climb up and set up as quietly as I could. Im sitting at most within 40 yards of where I saw that buck. This is a gamble though. While the old timers say the bucks here travel east/ west I didn’t see where he came from. I just set up south of where he was and I’ll hope for the best.
I was just thinking of how much I've walked and scouted over the years. Walked well established deer trails well after the season. Crawled through thick bedding areas. Found large bedding areas....and how very very few shed antlers I've found. Crazy.
