Well that was an exciting 10 minutes.

I heard something coming over my right shoulder. I looked and it was two dogs: A Beagle and a Redbone. It took a second to realize that these were my dogs, Elly May and Little Ann.

My first thought was oh no, I left the gate open and they’re all out and Beth is gonna kill me. I set a new speed record for climbing down from 30 feet. I wanted to get to them before they hit a trail.

I called them as I climbed down and then walked them back. On the way I remembered locking the gate so I was stumped.

I got to the house to find the gate wide open. My wife had come home but had to run to the bathroom and she forgot the gate.

It’s a good thing the two hounds tracked me to my tree.

    Good dogs.

I’m back on stand now and sweating like it’s July.

Also, I forgot to mention that I brought Thumper along for the first time this season.

She was feeling a little neglected since gun season has been open for 5 days.

Little Ann, makes me wonder about Old Dan.

Assuming she is named after Little Ann in "Where the Red Fern Grows".....

So looks like beef farmer was putting up a stand . He's back. Now his wind is going directly into the pines he's set up on the edge of. The deer cover and bedding for the hay field adjoining it. That might help me

I typed that then saw a deer in his field ,put phone away and decided to attempt to doe bleat it onto US and off him
. Well I got it to the very edge of our woods before . It walked up and into the pines he's hunting. It did bring it over closer. Not sure if it was a big doe or a big spike. No actual rack that I could see but it was all alone..
So looks like I'll be at camp in the morning. Cars packed clothes are getting a fresh hunter wash cleaning...need to get them in dryer...

Update on this buck. Met some other hunters who were after this guy too. The sent me these. Aug 1st of this year. So he either died not long after these pics of ehd (but he looks very heathy here), or got shot early season and went to water…. He sure got picked clean fast though. I imagine his velvet would be consumed just like his flesh if he still had it when he died. There was some dried goo on his rack with dead bugs in it. Im not done cleaning him up and i plan on going back to look for other piece of nose bone.
Edit: these guys were watching this buck for 4 years and put him at 7-1/2 here

The only book that has ever made me cry, I was in 5th or 6th grade at the time I read it. While I always loved the story it took me 24 years to buy the book and attempt to read it again. I couldn't do it. Something about Where the Red Fern Grows and Old Yeller that keeps me from revisiting them. Old Yeller was the first movie that I can remember making me cry. I've never seen Old Yeller again and I was younger than reading WtRFG.

Just something about those two that I'd rather reflect on the memories I have than renew them and wonder why they were so impactful at the time.

Awesome buck!! Too bad he didn’t die from your hand but it’s cool that you found it.

Hard to tell what cause of death was, one can assume, but not sure if they can test for EHD post mortem or not. One thing is for certain, those trail cam pictures could make some sane people do insane things, looks totally different in the dead head pics yet is most certainly the same deer.

Sucks to see them go like that, but unless poached he outsmarted quite a few hunters. And if poached, he outsmarted all hunters.

    You just happen upon him?

I hid in my closet in my room because i was ashamed i was crying my eyes out. Old yeller and one of the benji movies where the hawk swoops down and nabs one of the cougar kittens got me when i was 5 or 6 pretty good. You know they impact you when you remember that 35 yrs later
