This is insane. I convinced a guy on my squad to get back into hunting this year on public land. Showed him how to get in on the military base. He was apprehensive but he did it. He just called me crazy happy. Said he called in a monster on his 3rd hunt of the year. This thing is a pure hammer buck. He may never see another buck with this much mass ever again if he hunted there for 20 years. Unreal!
Ok, edited this. I posted before seeing your bow setup next to your doe you just shot. Congrats! That is textbook perfect shot placement IMO, that's exactly where I always try to hit them. You don't need the tube peep aligner, a.k.a. the eye stinger 3000, since you have a d-loop. You align the peep with the d-loop, so when you draw back the d-loop is pulled straight back by your release and thus the peep is aligned perfectly as well. This works really well once set up, but as the string stretches a bit you do have to press the bow and add or remove some twist to align again on occasion...just depends on the quality of string. With a new string set you do usually have to adjust it once or twice, but then once the string settles they stay aligned for a long time.
My new words to live by. I've been questioning everything I've been doing the past few years where I hunt. I search online about where I hunt, and I find random links to discussions on smaller local hunting forums, and they all say the same thing. "Low deer population", "deer are nocturnal in those woods", There's monsters in there but they only move at night, impossible to kill." "I never see anything in there" "Plenty of sign, but I've spent hours on the stand and never see anything." "No one bowhunts it because it is almost impossible to kill a deer there" "A very very very tough hunt, knock on doors instead." I was talking with my wife about me buying a 6 x 12 trailer and making half of it a camper, and the other half a processing station and making a few trips a season to NJ like VTwhitetail does. However, I have an untapped goldmine on my hands here, I just need to work harder, hunt harder, and go where the deer sleep to make it happen. I need to 100% change the way I hunt and I the way I look at hunting in order to be successful.
Uhg. I'd rather gut, skin, and quarter an elk than clean a turkey! Slimy mess they are. No sir, shoot them half way between top of back and bottom of belly and behind the shoulder like a deer. Center/center will get you a gut shot just like on a deer. What gets people in trouble on them is their long fur in the Fall. If you try to hold a 1/4 of the way up behind the shoulder on them by looking at where the belly appears to end, there is so much fur hanging down below where the actual end of the belly is that they still hit them too low. Just like what many do when shooting a coyote with it's winter fur grown in. 1/4 of the way up is super deceiving when there is such long hair giving the impression they're thicker than they really are. I think that's probably where the center of center thing comes from, but it only applies to north/south.
Not that I think you were dumb or anything, but I thought of the redeem part right away. Congrats man!
Pretty damn good shot for the worst bowhunter ever if you ask me. I almost disliked that post. This bowhunting thing isn't easy my friend. It is actually hard. Just in life there is ups and downs. The highs and lows of bowhunting. I love this sport. You work hard this , harder than most, **** happens. Congrats great job way to persevere
Wind gas shifted slightly from WSW to NNW. Supposed to stay that way the rest of the day. My gut is tellng to me to make a slight adjustment so ai can cover this bedding that thicket better. I think I will give another 20 or so and do that. Haven’t seen anything since the spike at 7:45.
