Can calls…. Yes or no? Never had a good experience and just watched another attempt fail and send the buck blowing

Where I hunt, no way. When I hunted the rut in Illinois for a few seasons on a very low-pressure farm, 60% of the time, it worked every time, on younger bucks.

I have never had luck with them, never had bad luck either but I leave it in the truck now. I think it's a gimmick, that may trigger curiosity on younger deer. I'd almost bet the same deer that come into it would have probably did the same with a few grunts.

Heck, I've never heard a doe bleet out in estrus the entire time I have hunted. Can't be that common.

Called one of the biggest bucks I’ve seen on the hoof into 25 yards using a grunt/can call combo last year. I don’t tip the can, I blow into the bottom so you can control how short/long the call is.

I've heard them often and when in full estrus I've had mature doe bleat non stop wondering around the woods. It's a muted sound though and the cans aren't unless you mute them as in a pocket or if you use a hand muff.

I watched a lot of this guys videos when I was younger. I went out Thanksgiving morning with my dad, and did the same sequence this guy did. I called in the biggest buck I’ve ever seen on foot. I was very inexperienced and wasn’t ready with my gun when he came in. Coulda shot him with my rifle at 20 yards. By the time he appeared it was too late to move. He was already eyeing me down. To this day it haunts me. Most beautiful buck I’ve ever seen. Perfectly symmetrical and huge bodied. I don’t use the can call much anymore but it has worked. Your not supposed to use it like the package says. Only short bleats not long ones. Long bleats are “alarm bleats” I didn’t know that til I started watching this guy. Peter also sells a alarm snort call that I recommend. Reading this guys books and watching his videos I honestly believe has made me a better hunter

If you haven’t watched him before I recommend it. There is a playlist of his on YouTube. It taught me how to correctly call deer. I rarely call for deer anymore. I need to get back to my roots

Heck of a night after getting back into the stand. Saw four more shooters. None in range but the 9 was chasing does in the corn field until dark. All of them were either cruising for does or on a doe already. It’s here!

Starting to look like muscle blood and trying to clot. Backing out and bringing the dog out either later tonight or in the am

Calling it now, tomorrow, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are the days big bucks drop for multiple people. Low temps, light winds, High Pressure parked over head and a new moon to go along with it. If I can do it before Friday it would be my earliest buck kill ever, mature buck anyway, I never kept track of all the scrubs

Cool, dry weather is set to prevail through the end of the work
week as Canadian high pressure slides into the upper Midwest
tomorrow and then shifts directly overhead by Wednesday evening.
The combination of clear skies and light winds will result in
favorable radiational cooling, especially Wednesday and Thursday
night when the high pressure is directly over the area. Low
temperatures below freezing are expected area-wide Tuesday through
Friday night, with most locations forecast to experience a hard
freeze (28 degrees or colder) Wednesday night.

When in doubt, back out. Should be plenty cool if need be overnight. Is it your dog?
