Back in the stand! Got back from the dealer and walked a couple field edges to see what the scrapes are looking like this year. Not a great way to hunt the area, but fun to check out anyway.

Wind is picking up some, should die off a little later. Other than being 15 degrees cooler, very similar conditions to Saturday evening when the bucks were moving early.

Good luck everyone getting out this evening!!

Just had one of the shooters from yesterday morning go by. Thought he was going to skirt through and hit one of my lanes but he stayed in the thick stuff. Hoping he cruises back by

No, not this year! I'm very out of shape and the walk to my deep spot is whooping me pretty good.

    :jaw:WOW... that's an old buck.
Do you think he has a rack that looks something like that annually?

I wasn't going to post this cause I'm pretty embarrassed by it, but it might help the LFTS crew. I had every intention of hunting until 1pm. Around 10 am the wind started to pick up, 15-25. My plan for thermals rising and the west wind over the ridge top were out the window. I knew I was in a good spot, in a saddle (land feature) with 6 trails converging. To my west is a thick swamp. To my east is the ridge, 100 feet in elevation (I'm almost on top of the ridge, the 100' is going downhill). My view wasn't the greatest, as I could only see 3 of the 6 trails due to hemlock trees, and the shot window allows no room for error. with the wind blowing, hearing them was out. I had to rely on vision.

Around 11, the thought started creeping in that no buck in his right mind would be cruising the ridge now, thermals are no longer rising. I let my mind get the better of me and ignore the fact that bucks will still cruise the west side of the swamp scent checking. "It's to early for that though."
At noon, my mind said this hunt is over, let's try the same spot tomorrow. I start packing up and climbing down. Once I break through the final hemlock branch line, I hear a twig snap and the sound of a large-bodied deer running out of my life. I look to see a large white a$$ and tail bound away effortlessly. it didn't blow and was quite stealthy on its retreat.

    Moral of the story....

IT IS NOVEMBER...AS LONG AS YOU ARE IN THE STAND WITH AN ARROW KNOCKED...YOU ARE IN THE GAME!!!

IT CAN HAPPEN AT ANY MINUTE!!!

    IGNORE THE SELF-DOUBT....

    STAY THE COURSE!

I re-learned a valuable lesson today, the first day of November. Do not let your mind F you!!!

I’m back in. Same spot I had the opportunity a while back that didn’t go so well. Wind is great. Coming rite up the hill where I’m expecting all the action to be.

I have no idea if they have history with this deer. They have a primo farm in one of the best counties in Illinois. I normally go up there but cant make it this year. It’s unbelievable up there. I will say this too there are alot of Funky deer like this up there. This one i passed a few yrs ago cause i didnt think it met their age requirements. The body just didnt look huge to me. 62C79395-0419-46FC-AD17-E6BFEDE63CDD.jpeg
When i confirmed to him that was the one i passed he said “Well that was dumb” Haha im not the one with all the size requirements. I figured better to let a deer i didnt know better walk and still have an open invite the next year but maybe that’s questionable

A friend / co worker hung himself on the first day of archery season a while back ( by accident) and my wife feels a bit of relief if I text her when I'm up and out of a tree. She worries alot. It was awful when I was working as a state trooper. I'd have to Let her know when I was on my way home from work

A little piece of mind for her thou.

    Thx for asking
